The rookie was Joe Nemechek and Iryan was a little out of his league, having never won a NASCAR Busch Grand National race.

But Irvan, this year's Daytona 500 winner, got a quick restart after the final caution period and took the lead with 13 laps left Saturday to win the AC Delco 200 stock car race at North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham, N.C. Irvan became the 16th different driver to win this year in 30 races. One cough from Rick Mears' engine was enough to hand Saturday's Marlboro Challenge all-star Indy-car race to a stunned Michael Andretti. Mears appeared on the way to an easy victory in the 45-lap event in Monterey, on Laguna Seca Raceway's 2.214-mile, 11-turn road course until the Chevrolet engine in his Penske racer sputtered coming off the final turn of the final lap. Baseball The rights to Cuban defector Rene Arocha were won by the St.

Louis Cardinals on Saturday in a special eight-team lottery conducted by Major League Baseball. The 25-year-old pitcher had three outings in Central Florida Instructional League games over the last month, his first work since defecting from his homeland on July 10 while he was traveling with Cuban national baseball team in Miami. The Commissioner's Office arranged the outings so teams could evaluate Arocha without him having to go through individual tryouts. Apparently only eight had enough interest to enter the lottery. Basketball Magic Johnson had 16 points and 17 assists as the Los Angeles Lakers held on to edge Joventut Badalona of Spain 116-114 Saturday to win the McDonald's Open basketball tournament in Paris.

It was the closest any European club team came to an NBA team in the tournament since it began in 1987. Magic Johnson upped the Laker lead to 116-112 when he drove the lane for a layup to provide a cushion for the Lakers with 1:48 'Whether win by 20 or 2 the main thing is to win," Johnson said. "We won and had fun." Charles Smith, the Los Angeles Clippers' starting forward, underwent arthroscopic surgery Saturday on his right knee and will be out from four to six weeks, the team said. The operation to repair torn lateral meniscus cartilage was performed by team physician Tony Daly at Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital. Smith had been experiencing pain and swelling in the knee throughout training camp and did not play in Friday night's exhibition loss to the Golden State Warriors.

Football The Big Ten Conference runner-up has an automatic postseason bid for the next four years to play in either the Holiday Bowl or Citrus Bowl. Under the agreement announced Saturday by the Big Ten and the two bowls, the conference's second-place finisher will play the Western Athletic Conference champion in this year's Holiday Bowl and then play in the Citrus Bowl in 1992,1993 and 1994. The agreement also calls for the Big Ten's third-place team to play in the Holiday Bowl for three years beginning in 1992. The agreement does not affect the Rose Bowl, which matches the Big Ten champion against the Pac-10 winner. Golf First-round co-leader Charles Coody shot a 6-under-par 66 Saturday to take a two-stroke lead after two rounds of the Transamerica Senior Golf Championship in Napa, Calif.

Goody's 133 total for two trips around the Silverado Country Club south course put him ahead of Jim Colbert, who had a second-round 65. Dale Douglass, who started the day two over, had a tournament record 63 to move within four strokes of Coody entering Sunday's final round. The previous low of 64 was set last year by Miller Barber. First round co-leader Lee Trevino, 70, Simon Hobday, 68, and Mike Hill, 67, were tied with Douglass at 137. DeWitt Weaver, 69, Arnold Palmer, 69, and George Archer, 66, were another stroke back.

Four-time winner Seve Ballesteros ignored a painful right foot to defeat Billy Andrade 3 and 2 in Saturday's semifinals of the World Match Play golf tournament in Virginia Water, England, setting up a final against Nick Price. Ballesteros had two injections of painkillers before the match and said the foot hurt throughout the 36-hole semifinal. "I had a hard time walking and I also missed some shots because I couldn't follow through," said the Spaniard, who won the title in 1981,1982,1984 and 1985 and has never lost in the final. "They're No. 9 in the country and we almost knocked them off their pedestal," Watson said.

"That's somewhere Kansas State has not been before. We've still got games left and we are going to have some success." Nebraska, which hasn't lost to Kansas State since 1968, countered with a 1-yard touchdown run by Brown and a 32-yard scoring option by McCant in the first quarter. Byron Bennett had a 33-yard field goal for Nebraska and Tate Wright had a 26-yarder for Kansas State to produce a 17-17 tie at half time. Nebraska, with 185 yards in total offense the first quarter, managed just one first down in the second period. Masters put Kansas State back on top when he stole the ball from Nebraska fullback Lance Lewis and ran 40 yards for a touchdown.

McCant hit Mitchell on a 4-yard pass to tie it, but Watson ran 3 yards on an option play to put the Wildcats ahead once more. Kansas State also drove to the Nebraska 16 midway through the fourth quarter only to have Wright miss a 32-yard field goal with 8:35 to play. That let Nebraska tie the game again. McCant found Mitchell behind the K-State defense on a 41-yard pass to the 3 and Brown ducked in for the touchdown one play later. Bennett's extra point kick tied it with 6:49 left.

Tyrone Hughes' 18-yard punt return to the Nebraska 40 with five minutes left put the Cornhuskers in position for the final touchdown drive. McCant ran 19" yards and Lewis went 25 to the 1, from where Brown vaulted in for the go-ahead points with 2:47 to play. K-State returns to KSU Stadium next Saturday to take on No. 22 Colorado, a 34-17 winner over Oklahoma on Saturday. Nebraska will play host to Missouri.

The Associated Press Mark O'Meara raises his fist after sinking a putt on the 18th green Saturday to wrap up the title at the Walt Disney World Golf Classic.

By The Associated Press LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. Mark O'Meara turned in one of his best finishes Saturday, but it was a little bit of luck that helped him win his first PGA tournament of the year. O'Meara regained a share of the lead of the Walt Disney World Golf Classic on the par-4 ninth hole when his 178-yard, 5-iron skipped into the cup for an eagle. "Those are the things that have to happen in order to win a golf tournament," he said. "You have to be a little bit lucky.

"That kind of gave me the boost and the charge I needed to get close to the leaders. Obviously the shot on number 9 was the shot of the O'Meara, who shot a tournament-low 64 on Saturday, prevailed by that one shot, edging David Peoples for the $180,000 winner's share of the $1 million purse. O'Meara, who was able to spend the week at his home less than a half hour from the tournament site, had led after the first two rounds but was one stroke off the lead entering the final round. Peoples, another local favorite who grew up in the Orlando area, carded a 65 in the final round, but ran out of birdies in the final four holes. "I thought if I could put it 20 under it would be awfully hard to beat," said Peoples, who is enjoying his best season on the tour since turning pro in 1981.

"I was a little bit surprised to look up there and see a 21.1 was a little bummed." O'Meara's eagle regained a share of the lead for him, but he took it for good with an 8-foot birdie putt on the 400-yard 16th hole. "I knew I didn't want to go to a playoff," said O'Meara, who made a 6-foot par putt at 18 to avoid a tie. O'Meara picked up a new car and $180,000 for his 21-under-par 267 effort pushing his season's earnings to almost $530,000. Buy A Little Time With Kansas Cellular What You Buy Is Time.
