Jim Everett, Purdue's junior quarterback, completed 20 of 28 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns and Mike Redina booted field goals of 31, 18 and 20 yards to spark the Boilermakers' upset before a crowd of 60,672. It was the second time Rendina, a junior, helped defeat Notre Dame with his right toe.

In 1981, as a Florida State freshman, he kicked three field goals in South Bend in the Seminoles 19-13 victory. Rendina left Florida State following the 1982 season, and attended Tallahassee Community College last year before transferring to Purdue. Purdue's opportunistic defense forced five Notre Dame turnovers and limited All-America candidate Allen Pinkett to 69 rushing yards on 22 carries. "This was the biggest win I've ever been associated with in all my years of coaching," Purdue's Leon Burtnett said. "We thought we could throw the ball on Notre Dame, and we had a great deal of success throwing on first down.

Our Ace set really confused them." The Ace, which features three wide receivers, a tight end and a single running back, is a formation Illinois popularized. "Really, we stole the Ace from Illinois and added some of our own wrinkles to it," Purdue offensive coordinator Jim Colletto said. "We worked on it all spring and fall to AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST DIVISION get ready for Notre Dame, and they never adjusted to it all day. We used the Ace some last year, but we couldn't do as much with it as we can now." Everett completed seven of nine passes thrown on first down for 107 yards and one touchdown, a 14-yarder to Price with 13:57 remaining, giving Purdue a 23-14 lead. Everett changed the play from a run to a pass at the line of scrimmage.

"The Ace is a great package, because it stretches out the defense and makes it easier for me to read defenses," Everett said. Purdue grabbed a 3-0 lead with 13:16 left in the first quarter after recovering a fumble by Notre Dame's Tim Brown on the opening kickoff. Notre Dame drove 77 and 70 yards for touchdowns on its next two possessions to take a 14-3 lead, but the Boilermakers scored the next 20 points, and a last-gasp Irish rally fell short. The Irish drove 66 yards to close within 23-21 with 4:21 left, but Purdue junior defensive end Don Baldwin intercepted a Steve Beurlein pass at the Notre Dame 35 with 2:25 to go, and the Boilermakers ran out the clock. The victory was Purdue's 20th over Notre Dame.
