is is as a Bell What Is Rock and Roll? May Be Peckin' Answer By VIRGIL KRET Just what is this thing called rock and roll? Is it some lurking evil trying to drag our youth down? Or is it just the younger generation's answer to the charleston, peckin', and "Poo Poop Pe Do." All is now quiet in downtown Pensacola but, alas Wednesday night, to the woe of the police force and the joy of the high school (and college) set, rock and roll was king, I attended the one night stand of the entertainers who sell the records. Out of curiosity, I wanted to see what makes it tick, this thing called rock and roll. My first surprise, (of many, to come) came halffilled Auditorium. Instead of a spitball throwing mob, I found the quiet hum of people talking, wait- ling for curtain call. It could have been the final minutes before a concert of the classics.

But youth will have its way. At 7:33 the strains of progressive jazz were broken by the pulsating voice of the "king." Suddenly the place became a living room of spontanious applause rhythm made hands and hearts and drums. This was the thing called rock and roll. The show that followed isn't important, but the young people who were there are. The young people who clapped and cheered and screamed like in the old days with Frankie.

The young people who left as quietly as they had come. Webster gives no definition of rock and roll but if he did it might read like this: A highly emotional form of music capable of changing ones mood from gay to sad and back again in moments. Banned in Boston. Ellis Noble New Sales Executive's Head Ray Noble was installed as president of Pensacola Sales Executives Club Tuesday night in ceremonies at the County Club. The boards' attorney gave them written opinion in which he a stated that Bishop had tenure as a supervisorison said he agreed that Bishop had tenure in the county school system but would not agree that it was on the supervisor's level. Wilson said he had the authority to transfer Bishop, to another position in the schools here. Tune in. Thursday, June 27, 1957 The Mensarola Journal 11A Headless Body Ruled as Crabb (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) cruiser on a secret mission and that the Russians had captured him and taken him to the Soviet Union. There was no official word on his fate, however, until the coroner's ruling today. Mrs. Margaret Elaine Crabb.

the frogman's divorced wife, testified today he had a "hammer' toe deformity and small feet like those of the corpse. Pathologist D. P. King said he found a scar on the left kee of the body. Sidney Knowles, a wartime buddy of Crabb, testified the frogman received a similar scar on swimming exercise in Italy in 1945.

King said the condition of the body indicated it had been in the water "for at least six months and it could well have been in the water for 14 months." A representative of the firm which supplied Crabb with his frogman suits after the war said the suit found on the body was identical with that sold Crabb. Future Car Will Fly, Hiller Says (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) Cruising speed is expected to be about 60 m.p.h. With twin turbines, probably automotive gas turbines of the type lately demonstrated by Chrysler, the possibility of power failure is almost eliminated. If one turbine fails, the other would keep the vehicle sufficiently stable to permit an easy emergency landing. Engineers say the fans have most of the advantages and almost none of the disadvantages of the ordinary helicopter.

They are easier to fly, cost less and can be operated around people with no chance that someone might walk into a whirling overhead rotor. Another advantage is the fact that they can be operated close to buildings, A helicopter operating close to a building gets a rebound of air which makes it very hard to handle. West Louisiana Coast Seems Audrey's Goal (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) tinued to run from 5-9 feet above normal, Pope said, causing people in low-lying areas to flee to higher ground. Hurricane warnings in the meantime were raised as far west as High Island, Texas, near Galveston. Although storm warnings have been lowered east of Louisiana to Pensacola, small craft are still advised to stay in port due to winds and squally conditions, Pope said.

U. S. weathermen have reason to smile over this hurricane because of the bureau's first experimental 30-day hurricane fore. cast. Dated June 17 the bureau in Miami predicted that "one or two tropical storms will threaten or hit the Gulf of Mexico coast within the next month." It went on to cite unusual meteorological conditions on which the 30-day forecast was based.

Records of the past 75 years show that such a hurricane would occur only once The in five tropical developed in the Gulf of Campeche June 25. NEW ORLEANS, June 26 (UP) Tides mounted along the historic South Louisiana coast tonight and thousands of persons fled to escape the wrath of Audrey, a 100- mile an hour hurricane due to strike land by nightfall tomorrow. Wind gusts up to 44 miles an hour were reported at Galveston as the storm approached the Gulf shoreline. TIDES RISING "Tides are now 2 to 3 feet along the upper Texas and Louisiana coast and will continue to rise, reaching 5 to 8 feet along the Louisiana coast and over the Mississippi Sound by late Thursday." the Weather Bureau said. Residents of coastal areas in the storm's path hurriedly packed their belongings and moved to safer refuge in inland cities.

Some 3,400 persons on Grand Isle, near the mouth of the Mississippi River moved to New Orleans, Thibodaux, and other southern Louisiana cities. Some 600 hardy residents of the island stayed on to ride out the hurricane in their homes despite police and Weather Bureau warnings to "move out while there is time." Rough waters and mounting tides raised Gulf waters almost to the level of Grand Isle's only highway and high seas eroded a road on one side of the island. Hurricane warnings were displayed over the entire Louisiana coastline. Thousands of fishermen and Cajuns who inFrench the colorful Louisiana bayou country, once a haven for pirates, began evacuating inland. Humble Oil Company, which extracts oil from the offshore tideland waters, stopped its Grand Isle operations at the southern tip of the state and evacuated its workers.

Maj. Gen. Raymond Hufft, Louisiana civil defense director, announced a public shelter program to care for families fleeing inland from the coast. Civil defense officials were put on a round-theclock standby alert and National Guard equipment was ordered readied for use. Fishermen and fur trappers in the bayou-studded South Louisiana regions stopped activities after 5 to 8 foot tides were predicted by tomorrow.

Many of the hardy Cajun fishermen refused to evacuate. But they secured their boats at inland docks a few miles north of the gulf. Oil workers poured inland from the offshore rigs as operators took extensive precautions. Operators said they will close down completely in the gulf until Audrey either strikes or dissipates, an operation that will cost millions, the companies estimated. Helicopters kept up a shuttling operation between land and rigs as far as 40 miles in the gulf and tugs and oil rig tenders were docked.

Grand Isle in deep South Louisiana was 70 per cent evacuated following latest hurricane advisories. The Coast Guard said at noon that Grand Isle already had been buffeted by squalls and high wind. Tides of three feet blocked all small boat operations. 10 P.M. Advisory NEW ORLEANS, June 26 (R- -The weather bureau here issued the following advisory on hurricane Audrey at 10 p.m.

All persons in low exposed places should move to higher ground. Winds are increasing along the upper Texas and Louisiana coasts and with reach gale force early Thursday.
