The Salina Journal Saturday, October 31,1987 Page 7 Theft suspects have 'run-in' with van By Harris News Service HUTCHINSON - Police responded to a local Dillons grocery store shortly after 8:30 a.m. Friday after a report of an unusual injury accident. Two youths suspected of shoplifting ran into the -side of a delivery truck Friday as they fled the store. Anthony Logan, 18, was apprehended at the scene. His 17-year-old half-brother was caught three blocks away. His name has not been released. Logan was taken into custody after a store clerk grabbed him. His partner, who received head injuries in the collision, ran from the scene but was found nearby 20 minutes later. When police arrived at the store, they found clerk John Mayes holding one of the youths. A : delivery truck was stopped near the northwest corner of the Dillons store. Mayes described what happened: Man pleads guilty in Hayden case MANHATTAN (AP) - A man ; pleaded guilty Friday to charges in :;the May 1 stabbing of Gov. Mike LHayden's brother and a second '. Kansas State University student. Rocco Denizio, 49, pleaded guilty in •Riley County District Court to one • count of aggravated battery and one -count of making a terroristic threat. • As part of a plea agreement in the • case, Denizio was ordered by Judge .Paul E. Miller to Larned State Hos- ;pital for psychiatric treatment before he is returned to court for sentencing. He was initially charged with two counts of aggravated battery in connection with the stabbing of Paul Hayden, 23, and Richard Verbis, 23, both of Manhattan. Aggravated battery is punishable by a maximum sentence of 20 years and a $15,000 fine. Making a ter- roristic threat is punishable by a sentence of one to five years and a $10,000 fine. Denizio could be confined at Larned for up to 25 years. Authorities said Denizio had been staying with the Hayden and Verbis for about a week before the stabbing. Hayden suffered a puncture wound in his arm and Verbis received slash wounds to his arm after Denizio allegedly attacked them in their apartment early on May 1. They were treated at a hospital. Denizio told the judge Friday he believed people were after him, and at one point the night before the stabbing heard Hayden and Verbis refer to him as a' 'statistic.'' "To me that would mean they would eliminate me," Denizio said. "...I thought they were trying to kill me, your honor." Riley County Attorney Kennedy said Denizio couldn't sleep that night, and when Hayden went to see what was wrong, he was stabbed. When Verbis came to Hayden's aid, he also was stabbed in the arm. 11.51 UNITED HIGH INCOME A mutual fund ~ * UlwUJJ. investing primarily in high yielding, lower-rated corporate bonds to earn a high level of current income. •Dividends paid monthly •Monthly compounding available through automatic reinvestment of dividends •Minimum investment: $500 •Free exchange with 1-4 other mutual funds with varying objectives IRA Plan Available To Tax-Shelter Your Earnings •Current annualized yield for the 90-day period ending October 27, 1987. As they were leaving the store, Mayes said, he saw them pick up five packs of cigarettes: One youth had two, the other had three. "We followed them outside and told them we wanted to talk to them," Mayes said. They pair started running west toward the alley, dropping the boxes with the cigarettes in them as they went. Marvin Heubach, Sedgwick, was driving a delivery truck in the alley, having just dropped off a shipment of potato chips. The two youths rounded the corner and slammed into the side of his van, he said. Mayes said he grabbed one of the youths, who did not have any apparent signs of injury. The other one then got up and allegedly threatened Mayes. "He reached in the back and said, Til shoot ya,'" Mayes said. "I don't know if he had a gun or not. "He was bleeding real bad out of the mouth and nose. His teeth looked like they were busted." Blood also was coming from the back of the youth's head. "I think he was more interested in getting out of here than saving his buddy," Mayes said.
