the car he was driving flipped over Tippecanoe County police said James Clevenger 1919 Salem St lost control of his car at 9th St Rd and Burnett Rd The car slid off the road sideways and rolled on its top Clevenger told police he did not know why the accident occurred It was reported to police at 9:23 pm Larry A Shireley of Battle Ground a second year graduate student at Purdue University has re ceived the Health Educa tion Traineeship of the American Lung Associ ation of Indiana for the second year in a row The $5000 stipend was established by the associ ation last year and pro vides financial support for a Purdue graduate student in health education with an emphasis in respiratory health Through the traineeship the association prepares professionals in the health education discipline andalso promotes basic re search according to Prof Arson probed in lodge fire A Arson is suspected in a fire that burned several curtains and caused smoke damage to the Masonic Lodge in Buck Creek at 2:30 pm Saturday Buck Creek Volunteer firemen found six basement windows on the west side of the building broken and the curtains on each window burned off The flames also scorched the ceiling above the curtains according to ire Chief Mike Eastridge Eastridge said firemen found matches and rolled up pieces of paper around the windows They were probably used to set the curtains on Walter (Michele) rodge both of Lafayette Robert Helmerick ATTICA Robert Helmerick 56 a foreman at Harrison Steel Casting Co died at 5:05 pm riday in St Elizabeth Hospital Lafayette after an illness of one month A native and life resident of Attica he was a graduate of Attica High School He was employed as a foreman in the machine shop at Harrison During World War II he was a radio operator with the Air orce In 1941 he was married at Williamsport to Catherine Jackson who survives Mr Helmerick was a member of the irst United Methodist Church raternal Order of Eagles American Legion Post 258 at Williamsport and Disabled American Veterans Surviving with the widow are two daughters Mrs Gary (Nancy) Hiller of Plainfield and Mrs Robert (Betty Jo) May of Attica two brothers Merle Helmerick of its top police reported The teen ager Ellis Daniel Solley died of multiple injuries police said A cousin who was riding in the car 22 year old James Solley of Gary was treated and released at Home to enact a state law establishing uniform procedures for collective bargaining by police and firemen said Bloomington Mayor rank McCloskey McCloskey speaking at the annual meeting of the Indiana ire Chiefs Association here riday also said many Indiana cities may face serious cutbacks in vital services if the property tax levy is frozen in 1980 public officials take a very dim view of public safety said McCloskey who is chairman of the Metropolitan Mayors Committee a group that repre sents the largest cities is intolerable that houses should burn or people maimed on the highway be unat tended because of economic disputes with local govern McCloskey predicted the levy freeze facing local governments in 1980 will be the major issue of the next session of the legislature i law will not allow cities to increase their property tax levy by a single dollar in 1980 over the amount of property taxes collected in said McCloskey The Democrat said inflation and the freeze will mean funds would not be available for wage or benefit increases to firefighters police and other city employees McCloskey predicted the levy freeze supported by Re publican Gov Otis Bowen has a strong chance of being retained in the light of growing opposition to tax increases brought into the spotlight by California voters approving Proposition 13 a matter of both philosophic principle and sound government
