riday olice recorded a total of at least 50 crashes in the area during and after a snowfall Injured was Mrs Ellen Swti zer 42 Otterbein who was reported in serious condition in the intensive care unit of Indiana University Med ical Center today Mrs Switzer suffered severe face injuries in a car semi truck collision on North River Road at Happy Hol low Road at 11:30 pm riday The victim was pinned in her car for some time following the crash The Switzer car was southbound on Indiana 43 (North River Road) when a truclj driven by Richard letcher 34 of 76 Cor Dale Mobile Home Court jack knifed on the snow slick pavement West Lafay ette police said The letcher truck was north bound and the driver was trying to avoid a third vehicle which had skidded from Happy Hollow Road across Indiana 43 in front of the truck i The third Vehicle which struck in the ensuing crash ended in a ditch The letcher truck jack knifed and was across the centerline when struck in the rear tandem wheels by the southbound veteran remonstrator of many Tippecanoe Area Plan Com mission (APC) hearings is the latest member of the planning body Mrs Newell was appointed to the post this week by the county council as its citizen representative She replaces Joseph Kerkhoff a charter member of the APC who told the council he wish to be reappointed A Sheffield Estates resident Mrs Newell has been active the past 18 months in preparing opposition and speaking in behalf of residents opposed to the building of 377 homes adjacent to Sheffield subdivi sion at Indiana 43 and County Road 500 She said she would abstain from all discussions and voting on the Sheffield debate that is still pend ing before the APC course I became familiar with the workings of the APC as a remonstrator But I view my appoint ment as a challenge to serve as a private citizen to help better planning in Tippecanoe she said A housewife and mother of three children Mrs Newell earned a bachelors degree in home econom ics and a masters degree in clothing and textiles from Purdue in 1966 67 Her husband is a counselor at Jefferson High School She is a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church treasurer of the Purdue Home Economics Alumni Association and is 4 judge for clothing and dress reviews A resident of the county since 1962 she was reared on a farm near rankfort Mrs Newell said she will continue to work with a Sheffield neighborhood organization that mails news letters to 20 residents there and about 100 others in Raineybrook and Trees subdivisions to keep them in formed of local issues affecting their neighborhoods
