Gulden is a freshman at Carnegie-Mellon University, and this is the first time a Hawaii resident has received a Supreme Emblem Club scholarship.

1980) (A-29648) Hasegawa Komuten (USA) Inc. has made a $10,000 contribution to Kuakini Medical Center's Progressive Health Care Building. The presentation was made recently at dedication ceremonies for the new Hasegawa Komuten building on Mililani Street. The Progressive Health Care Building is a 350-person facility for elderly patients. The building was completed at a cost of $10 million, half of which was financed through state grants and loans.

The balance is being raised through contributions. Makaala provides grant Makaala a private corporation that enables blind and other handicapped people to operate the news vending stands at Honolulu Airport, has given Honolulu Community College $22,768 to cover major costs of the college's "Interpreting for Deaf People" program for a year. The grant enables the program to continue. Unexpected cutbacks in federal funds to the state's Department of Social Services and Housing which had been supporting the program caused the college to seek new money, Makaala, which has grown since 1971 to a company with $2 million in annual sales, has begun a practice of contributing to other organizations that meet goals of helping handicapped people. Hawaii has a critical shortage of trained interpreters for the estimated 4,700 deaf people in Hawaii.

Honolulu Community College began its "Interpreting for Deaf People" program in the spring of 1979 with non-credit workshops. The first credit courses were offered the following summer. Times assists students For the 12th straight year. Times Super Markets has awarded college scholarships to 12 University of Hawaii students. The scholarship program, open to Times employees and their relatives, provides full tuition and fees until the recipients are graduated.

Reynolds heads board Dr. Ronald Reynolds, 34, a Mililani optometrist, has been elected president of the Hawaii Board of Examiners in Optometry. Reynolds is a graduate of Iolani High School, Creighton University and Pacific University. He also attended the Naval School of Health Care Administration. Dr.

Beryl Chun, Kaiser optometrist, was named vice president of the state board. Carolee Stamper of Oceanic Properties was added to the board, and Honolulu attorney Stanley Kuriyatna will retain his board seat. Honigsfeld exec director Noel Honigsfeld, who holds a master's of public health degree from the Univer sity of Hawaii, has been named executive director of the Hawaii chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. Honigsfeld was previously with Hawaii Medical Service Association. He completed his undergraduate work in business administration at the University of California.

Mundo gets model prize Ranis at UNESCO meet Beatrice Ranis, who chairs the state's Foundation on Culture and the Arts, is one of 10 persons representing the United States at the 21st general conference of UNESCO in Yugoslavia. The participation of Ranis, a longtime leader in Hawaii's Filipino community, was announced recently by U.S. Sen. Spark Matsunaga. The conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is in progress in Belgrade and will end Tuesday.

From 1941 to 1962, Yamamoto worked for the old Honolulu Rapid Transit Co. Yamamoto founded several other organizations besides Club 15, including the Honolulu Buddhists' Cultural Society and the Hawaii Buddhist Council. In the years immediately following World War II, he was known for providing hospitality to Asian Buddhists on their way to the U.S.

Yamamoto, who could trace his ancestry back to the Genji warrior clan of feu members on the same standard he used Hawaii, which often numbered some of the world's greatest thinkers among its invited speakers. The group was also known as Club 15, as it held its dinner meetings on the 15th of each month. It concentrated its interest especially on subjects designed to help for their speakers solely for their high intellectual level.
