LcRoy Collins today said he could not justify thej use of funds for fire ant eradication unless the program is approved by experts.

The statement was made in an swer to a question at a weekly press conference. Collins was asked if he were giv-ine consideration to a request by Escambia Rep. George Stone that funds for fire ant eradication be held up until the program could be reviewed by a legislative com mittee and discussed with the State Plant Board. Collins said he, of course, would give Stone's suggestion "serious consideration," but added that "I could not justify the use of funds except in a program approved by experts in the lieid. COOL TO THIS AREA Collins said the State Plant Board had advised the Cabinet Budget Commission that it would be "wasteful for big expenditures of the funds to be used in extreme Northwest Florida where the infestation of the fire ant is very complete." One of the factors involved in the decision, Collins said, is that such a program would have to be dovetailed with similar eftorts by Alabama along the border to be effective.

He added that the present program, which has been approved, concentrates on containment in the fringe areas, and the Plant Board said such a procedure is scientifically sound. Collins said he has dictated a letter to Rep. Stone in which he makes it clear that the Budget Commission is willing to discuss the matter and receive any information Stone might like to add. Land has been set aside for two school sites in the area and parks and playgrounds will be dedicated after study by the city planning department.

There will be 800 homes in the development. FHA financing is planned. Drake estimated down payments on the homes would run between $850 and $1,150 and the monthly payments on a 25-year-loan between $80 and $97. Officials of my firm have faith in the continued growth of Pensa- coia and the surrounding area, Drake said. And these homes will help meet the demands of this growth.
