of 40 given by the foundation this year The grant is "to support the re search of young faculty mem bers at universities and medi cal schools and to assist un usually promising individuals who may be handicapped in obtaining research erants show on which he appears daily in New York will serve as master of ceremonies Whitcomb will introduce spe cial guests The Mitchell High School band of 100 instruments will present an hourlong concert The invocaiton will be given by Chaplain John Campbell of the Air orce base near Peru which was renamed for Grissom after going by the name of Bunker Hill Mitchell na tive Virgil I Grissom made fellow Hoosiers proud by becoming the second US astronaut to fly into space Thus on the 10th anniver sary of the Project Mercury sub orbital flight Wednesday it was fitting and proper that Purdue University graduate a Grissom be honored with the dedication of the new Virgil I Grissom State Memorial at Spring Mill State Park The park' and the city of Mitchell are almost contigu ous here in Southern Law rence County south of Bed ford and it was appropriate that the memorial will be lo cated permanently in the lovely natural setting of one of most popular parks close enough that old friends and acquaintances can walk here from their homes to i it whenever they wish Grissom after his 1961 flight was command pilot of the first Gemini flight on March 23 1965 On Jan 27 1967 while testing the Apollo 1 capsule at Cape Kennedy Grissom and two other astro nauts were killed in a flash fire The dedication Wednesday also coincides with the second anniversary of the historic walk on the moon for the Apollo 11 astronauts July 21 1969 Gov Edgar Whitcomb declared the date a state holi day last year and again this year The mayors of Bedford Bloomington and 1966 and 1969 flights Yeung will make a jet trip to the park to help dedicate th? memorial and will speak at the ceremony Then he will fly tn Cape Kennedy to par ticipate in the countdown for the Apollo 15 moon flight scheduled for July 26 parents Mr and Mrs Dennis Grissom will participate They still live in Mitchell where Grissom is a retired railroader Two broth ers and a sister of the astro naut and their families will attend widow Betty who was Mitchell High School sweetheart was seen as a doubtful attender Their son Scott now 21 re cently sustained a leg frac ture in an accident They Corps Volunteers Seen WASHINGTON (upi) The Peace Corps expects 26000 volunteers this year a gain of 7000 over 1970 Director Joseph Blatch ford said the increase marks the first upturn in requests mester will end before Christ mas this year Purdue University changed Its calendar for 1972 73 and like the Bloomington campus will begin school before Labor Day next year The Christ mas holiday under the new schedule will separate the se mesters In the past semes ters ended about two weeks after the Christmas vacation This year Indiana will start the program by enrolling stu dents tor the fall semester next month The second se mester will begin in January Indiana officials said that in addition to getting exams out of the way so students can enjoy their holiday more the new schedule will get them off earlier in the spring to hunt jobs program will be gin in 1972 with the first en rollment date set for Aug 28 1972 The first semester will end Dec 20 1972 The second semester will run Jan
