president of the society Bee Photo Rugged Drive French Girls Travel Just For NEW YORK (UPI) we were a spectacular said one of the four French girls who have just completed a rugged 30000 mile drive from the southern tip of South America to Alaska It was Martine Libersart 25 a nurse telling that sometimes when their drip-dry lingerie hadn't drip-dried overnight drape it on aerials of their two station wagons and let the breeze finish the process as they drove The four made the trip the adventure of it" in two small foreign-made cars most of it over unpaved highways Michelle Ray 26 a former Chanel model said wanted to show that an amateur team of young women can complete such a trip which those big brave rugged men boast of without choosing the easy route they take and without losing feminine charm" The four finished the trip officially at Anchorage but then hit the road again via Montreal and into New York for a few days before flying themselves and cars back to Paris The other two were Elaine Lucotte 22 a Paris public relations woman and Betty Gerard 25 an interior decorating student Official Finds Sponsors I talked with Miss Libersart who was a nurse in Algeria during the war there and Miss Ray a divorcee and mother of a small son who worked for Chanel for two years She took her idea for such a trip to Maurice Herzog the French minister of youth and sports he approved the idea and she then talked an automobile company and a French magazine into footing the bill Miss Ray said the trip cost about $5000 not including the trans-atlantic air fare But that did not include food which ranged from beans in Brazil to steak at some United States stops hamburger at others (they liked hamburgers) and apple pie for Miss Libersart every time she could find it on the menu It became her favorite dessert she said Most of their meals however came from the canned fruits vegetables and meats they stocked along the way They carried a carbine to use to kill fresh meat They never used it They carried a dagger for protection but it never was used other than as a can opener The four traveled in twos alternating as drivers of the two small cars the auto firm provided The cars were light i enough for them to lift out of a rut as they sometimes had to All Kinds Of Roads Miss Ray said of the 30000 miles they drove 22000 miles were dirt gravel or sand-surfaced only away from the cities in South she said no paving" Their trip began in June at Ushuaia in Tierra Del Fuego only 300 miles north of the Antarctic circle They crisscrossed South America on routes friends had suggested They came into Panama and up Central America on the Pan American Highway The rest of the route was via Las Vegas Salt Lake City through Canada to Fairbanks and Anchorage Sometimes the girls said drive for hundreds of miles without seeing another vehicle and once they ran through an Indian bandit barricade near the Paraguayan border But they were never in danger otherwise They made no hotel or inn reservations in advance and 25 nights of the trip were spent in the cars Rest stops Miss Libersart said often were the nearby jungle and cut a short path with machete The four began the trip with one suitcase for each girl but cut it in half when they found they needed more space to store fuel spare parts television and movie cameras They traveled with seven pairs each of Chanel designed slacks and blouses one sweater each cosmetics and lingerie met many they said they were no problem We always left town too Now the four will go to a ski resort near Paris for a rest and to sort out material for a book and television documentaries With four females on a long rugged trip there clashes of temperament? maybe once in a while some little said Miss Ray still speaking after six
