In addition, Pulitzer owns a newspaper in Tucson, the Arizona Star, and two radio stations in Phoenix. Pulitzer Broadcasting win retain its corporale offices in St. Louis, said Karpowitz. By WILL HOFFMAN, Journal TV Editor The owner of Albuquerque's KOAT-TV must sell one of his TV stations but it won't be Channel 7 here.

"We have definitely, completely, totally decided it won't be KOAT-TV in Albuquerque," said Ray Karpowitz, vice president of Pulitzer Broadcasting Division in St. Louis. "Under no circumstances would we even consider selling it." "It's a tremendous station and we're extremely proud of it," said Karpowitz. "It's the No. 1 (affiliate) station for ABC.

We're very bullish about the station, Albuquerque and New Mexico." Karpowitz said a decision on which other station to sell should be made in the coming few weeks. Pulitzer now owns six VHF stations, one over the limit set by the Federal Communications Commission. Pulitzer recently acquired two TV stations in North Carolina in exchange for its St. Louis flagship station, KSDK-TV. The swap was caused by government pressure for Pulitzer to divest itself of crossownership of a newspaper (The St.

Louis Post-Dispatch) and KSDK-TV in the same community- Pulitzer acquired WFBC-TV in Greenville-Ashville and WX1I-TV in Winston-Salem, owned by Multimedia, which also faced crossownership action. KSDK-TV is, located in the 12th largest TV market in the United States while Greenvilie-Ashville is ranked No. 35 and Winston-Salem is Jo. 49, according to Arbitron. Pulitzer also owns VHF TV stations in Omaha; Lancaster, FUND-RAISING EFFORTS at Channel 5 recently netted the PBS affiliate just over $150,000 in telephone pledges, said KNME-TV officials.

More than 5,000 families, individuals and businesses donated the money during the 17-day "Festival '81" fund drive and public awareness camgaign. During "Festival '80" a year ago, the station received $133,000. This year, Channel 5 netted a 13 percent increase in money given and a 21 percent increase in the number of pledges. Some 350 people volunteered to help KNME-TV during the drive. Funds are used for program acquisition, equipment and maintenance costs and day-to-day operations.

Public donations represent about one-fifth of the station's $1.6 million annual budget, said Jon Cooper, station manager. Viewers have been "very, very good to us and deserve a great deal of thanks," said Cooper. "Now more than ever, funds from public contributions are a critical part of our funding base." The 17-day drive fell short of the S190.000 target goal but the shortfall is expected to be made up from the station's continuing mail campaign, said Channel 5 officials.
