Action continues Sunday with singles and doubles at Bama Lanes and team competition at Montgomery Lanes. The GMWBA's delegate weekend concludes Sunday.

The group's delegate dinner was held Friday night with former state treasurer Annie Laurie Gunter delivering the keynote address. The GMWBA also held a memorial service for all it's members who died during the previous year. The GMWBA held its annual Hall of Fame inductions Friday night. Inducted were Frances Gray, Amanda Jensen, Evelyn Lathan, Margie Weldon, Alois Smith, Dorothy Stansell and Christine Streit. Cargile Journal Sports Editor 01 Jeff Davis wins meet OPELIKA Jeff Davis turned in the record-breaking performances but Opelika turned in the points in Saturday's third annual Opelika Invitational track meet.

Jeff Davis' Reginald Huffman jumped 6-9 in the high jump for a meet record to get things started and his teammates followed suit. Steve Holloway ran a 49.5 400 meters, Luther Orum ran a 4.15 1,500 meters and the mile relay team of Holloway, Melvirt Taylor, Alex Huntley and Sam Tatum ran a 3:30 mile realy. All were meet records. TUSCALOOSA Randy Hunt, 21, once a shortstop on a Robert E. Lee baseball team, was transformed into a catcher in junior college and now is considered one of the best receivers in the South.

At least, that is the way the New York Yankees look at the 6-foot, 185-pounder who now plays for the University of Alabama baseball team. One of the biggest weekends in Hunt's young baseball career is here. The top Yankee scouts were in Tuscaloosa Saturday and will be Sunday as Alabama meets Mississippi State University in a three-game series. The scouts want to check once more on the athlete they drafted in the third round last summer. They will find him hitting .345 with four home runs and three triples to his credit already in the young season.

Hunt is a late bloomer. When he was at Lee High School, Hunt felt his best sport was football. "I thought baseball was my weakest sport," he said. He came mighty close to signing a football scholarship at Troy State. He didn't know he was good enough in baseball until he went to Birmingham to play in the annual North-South game his senior year.

Chattahoochee Valley Junior College coach B.R. Johnson saw Hunt and asked him to come and play baseball. Little did Hunt know he would become a catcher until he went to Chattahoochee. In his first game, Chattahoochee met Gulf Coast Junior College, known for its good, young players. All Hunt did that day behind the plate was throw out 13 base runners.

"It never dawned on me until that game that I might be a good catcher," he said. "After that game a scout talked to me." It was at that moment Hunt began looking at professional catchers. He started studying them on television. He learned a little bit from a Montgomery Rebels coach. Mostly it was just hard work, though, that helped him develop as a catcher.

"My arm got strciger in junior college," he said. "I never really had a strong arm, but in November and December my sophomore year, I got out in the outfield and threw balls as far as I could throw them. We had old balls and some were heavy. When I would pick up a new ball it felt so light I could throw the heck out of it." Hunt's catching fundamentals got better also. He learned to block pitches in the dirt.

As a hitter Hunt was hitting home'runs instead of singles and doubles. His sophomore year at Chattahoochee he had 11 home runs. Those statistics were enough to get the attention of the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers drafted him in the fifth round of the secondary phase, but it was last June's draft that Hunt liked even better. The Yankees picked him in the third round.

Yankee scouts wanted to see how well he could do against good college pitching and asked him to play summer baseball in the Valley League in Virginia. Hunt went to Virginia for the summer. Central took third in the meet, Carver got fourth, Auburn was fifth and Lanier took sixth. Briefly Selma edges Lee 2-1 Selma High School's Eddie Jones singled in two runs in the fifth inning and Saint pitcher Clifford Jordan stranded 11 runners in beating the Lee Generals 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Pete Lee Field. Lee took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Randy Hooks scored on a single by Johnny Morgan.

General pitcher Danny Wachs pitched well enough for that to stand up, but a costly error enabled Jones, Selma's ninth-place batter, to hit his winning single. David Evans reached on an error to open the fifth. David Lipham laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the Generals threw the ball into right field putting runners on second and third. One out later, Jones delivered. Jordan, 1-0, was in constant trouble the last three innings, but he stayed ahead by stranding two runners in the fifth inning, two in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Lee had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh but Jordan fanned two straight batters to end the game. Wachs, 0-2, allowed only four hits and two walks while striking out 11. Lee, 1-2, will play Huffman Monday afternoon at 3:30 in Birmingham. SELMA OHO I I 4 I LEE 001 000 I 1 7 3 Jordan and Jones; Wachs and Selph. W-Jordan (1-0); L-Wachs 10-2).

3B-Manning (Lee). Lady Tiders win meet TUSCALOOSA The University of Alabama women's track and field team captured eight of 15 first places to win its third consecutive Alabama Invitational meet here Saturday. AUM signs Fencher BIRMINGHAM Barry Fencher, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound center from Lawson State Junior College, has signed a basketball grant-in-aid with Auburn-Montgomery. Fencher, who played at Wenonah High School, averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds as a sophomore at Lawson, scoring in double figures in all 31 games. He shot 68 percent from the floor and had a season-high 43 points against Alexander City, and was named All-Alabama Junior College Conference.

"Barry gives us our first true center," said Senator coach Larry Chapman. "He will make our other frontline players better because they now can play facing the basket. "We feel fortunate to sign a player of Barry's ability. Not only is he a fine player, but he is also a fine person and a good student." Oldfield, Floyd lead U.S. TOKYO (AP) Shot putter Brian Oldfield and sprinter Stanley Floyd led American athletes to 13 victories in the Sunkist International Indoor Track and Field meet Saturday.

France, Italy and Sweden won one even each in the one-day meet held on a special track built over the 1964 Olympic swimming pool. Thirty-three athletes from nine countries competed against a select Japanese It was almost a disaster. i Scouts came down to see him play. In a doubleheader, Hunt cracked four home runs and threw out several base runners. But in the last game of the summer, Hunt ran out a ground ball to first base.

When he stepped on the base he felt his knee give. He had to have knee surgery. The Yankee scouts did not give up on him. "They offered me a contract, but they wanted me to wait out the rest of the year. I talked to my parents about it.

It was a big decision. I knew I might get another chance (to be drafted). I thought I could go to school and have something to fall back on. I had an opportunity to go to Mississippi State, Florida State and Alabama. Alabama was just beginning to sink more money into its baseball program.

It is going to get stronger and stronger, so I chose Alabama." He has not disappointed the Crimson Tide or Yankee scouts. With the Yankees showing a lot of interest still, Hunt had one person he could talk to about the organization. It just so happened that Oscar Gamble plays outfield for the Yankees and lives in Montgomery. "Oscar's brother and my dad work together," said Hunt. "Oscar has got a gym in his backyard.

We got together a couple of times and worked out. Oscar is really impressed with the Yankee operation." Hunt feels he might stand a real good chance of playing in the Yankee organization, even as soon as this summer. "Their minor leagues are not filled with catchers," he said. "I would have a better chance with them than some other clubs." A couple of good weekends, with Yankee scouts watching him, and Hunt could be on his way up in June. A team is not allowed to offer a college player a contract until the school season is over.

"My knee feels good as new. All I need is a couple of good weekends. I could be hitting .400. "I have never started out strong at the beginning of a season, but I am far ahead of the game this year. I usually end up stronger at the end of the year." With a good year, Randy Hunt could be wearing those pin striped Yankee uniforms in early Trinity girls lose Trinity High School's girls tennis team dropped a pair of season-opening matches to Mobile schools Friday and Saturday.

The coach said he missed seeing some of last year's senior players, adding, "We're a long, long way from Tip-perary." Bryant said the practice was satisfactory, and, "We went through some learning periods and worked on fundamentals. We will continue to pep it up as we go along." The Tide resumes drills on Monday.
