eijc 4HonU)oincra atocrttscr ALABAMA JOURNAL 3B SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1981 Austin women's champ; McEnroe, Borg win Borg's booming serve produced 14 aces under the lights. It was ifiost productive in the sixth game of ihe second set when, down love-40, the Swede snapped off three straight aces to pull to deuce. He hit a fourth ace when Connors had another break point, then won the next two points on a backhand winner and a service winner. Borg broke Connors, a three-fjrae champion here, in the first and fifth games of the first set. After Connors broke Borg in the fourth game of the second set, the right-hander broke back in the seventh, then broke again in the 11th game before holding his own serve to win the set.

The only break in the final set came in the ninth game, as Connors could win only one point on his own serve. It is Borg's fourth trip to the ILS. Open finals, a title he has never won. "Tonight I felt the timing from the very start of the match," Borg said. "It felt good.

"Even at Wimbledon I was, not playing like this." received more than $60,000 for the victory. "At 16, everything came too fast I think I was too young to realize how important it was." The loss crushed the hopes of Navratilova, who broke down and cried as she received a standing ovation at the awards ceremony immediately following the match. Navratilova, who has won Wimbledon twice, defected from her native Czechoslovakia following the 1975 U.S. Open and became a naturalized U.S. citizen earlier this year.

This was the first time she had reached the finals here. "I tried too hard," Navratilova said. "It would have meant so much more to win it (the U.S. Open) as an American. But it didn't turn out that way.

"Next year." Navratilova began the match as if she would crush Austin easily, winning 10 of the first 11 points with her powerful serve and accurate volleys. "I thought she really had me after the first set," Austin said. "She came on like gangbusters. She came which were picked up by both the umpire's microphone and CBS-TV's microphone, which was broadcast nationally. "It's unfortunate to end a match like that," McEnroe said.

"I wasn't robbed," Gerulaitis said afterward. "I'm not saying I would have won the next point but he (McEnroe) was getting very tight." Gerulaitis broke McEnroe in the 12th game to capture the opening set. The blond right-hander pulled even with his fellow New Yorker at 15-15 when the defending champion netted a forehand volley. Then Gerulaitis reeled off the next three points to take a 1-0 lead. McEnroe, however, came right back, breaking Gerulaitis in the opening game of the second set.

Gerulaitis, who won three of his four meetings with McEnroe in 1980, double-faulted twice in a row to put the left-hander at break point. Then the feisty McEnroe closed out the break when Gerulaitis' forehand volley sailed long. "When you want something to happen so bad, you freeze out there," Navratilova said. "And I froze out there a couple points. I tried so hard.

"I had a problem putting her away. I guess I'm going to have to play better when I'm ahead." Austin's victory was made sweeter since she had been sidelined for almost four months earlier this year with a lower back injury. She returned to the women's circuit in May. But she skipped the French Open, the first of the Grand Slam tournament, the following week before winning at Eastbourne, England, and reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. The McEnroe-Gerulaitis match ended in controversy as McEnroe's winning cross-court overhead landed on the sideline.

Gerulaitis disagreed with the linesman and umpire, and as McEnroe stood at the net ready to shake hands, Gerulaitis was standing at the sideline, pointing his racket to a spot just outside the court. Gerulaitis then stormed the umpire's chair, uttering profanities si it Cs vs NEW YORK (AP) Tracy Austin overcame swirling winds and Martina Navratilova's devastating serve and volley Saturday to win the U.S. Open tennis championship. She overcame all three with her patented baseline game to capture her second Open singles title, 1-6, 7-6, 7-6. Defending men's champion John McEnroe, the top seed, shook off an ankle injury to outlast No.15 Vitas Gerulaitis 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 and move into Sunday's final against second-seeded Bjorn Borg of Sweden, who beat No.14 Jimmy Connors 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.

Borg appeared unbothered by a death threat. According to an announcement made in the press box at the National Tennis Center, a man had telephoned the center threatening Borg's life. Austin's first title, in 1979, made her the youngest singles champion in the history of America's premier tennis event. "I think this means more to me than the first one," said Austin, who i4l I1; Jacksonville State's Reginald ASU point. Jacksonville later capitalized on another Hornet error, this time recovering a bad pitch from Caldwell to running back Walter Shelly.

Patterson took the Gamecocks 41 yards in eight plays to tie the score when he connected with Broughton on a 5-yard pass. Krohn added the extra point. But a second unit Alabama State defense would not be denied in the second half. With starters Zack Barnes, Horace Brookins, Paul Sanders and John Thornton out with injuries, the Hornets stopped the Gamecocks twice inside the 10-yard line in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory. Jacksonville State had put together an impressive 80-yard drive, going all the way to Alabama State's 5 with a first down.

But four straight rushes two by Reginald Goodloe off right tackle, one by Broughton at left end, and a sweep by Patterson were all stopped. Stanley Johnson made the final stop of Patterson, 2 yards short of the end zone. "Believe it or not, I didn't think we could hold up against clubs like Jackson State and Jacksonville back to back," said James. "I told them I thought we were better than than Jackson, but I didn't know about Jacksonville. They fell behind in the first half and I told em they had to reach down and show some guts." James was particulary pleased with the play of Caldwell.

The senior from Columbus, completed 6 of 15 passing attempts for 66 yards and had no Interceptions. He also gained 30 yards in 11 rushing attempts. But possibly the biggest play of the game came on the winning field goal drive. "The first set, I was going really fast," she said. "I was hitting extremely short. I didn't get a rhythm." But the teen-ager from Rolling Hills, who said she was bothered by the swirling winds and Navratilova's serve, settled into her own rhythm and realized she was hitting short to Navratilova's backhand. She fought back with her own game, drilling shot after shot from the baseline, repeatedly passing Navratilova whenever the lefthander ventured to the net. Yet it came down to two tiebreakers a best-of-12-points formula that would seem to favor the big server.

Austin made it her own territory, capturing the first 7-4, then sweeping to victory in the second 7-1. Navratilova double-faulted on the final point. A' has A holding call, two unsuccessful running plays and an incomplete pass by backup Dwight Crenshaw set the stage for Egbuna's winning kick. "John was just super," said James. "The man is a tough man.

He took some licks, but it paid off. If he's got any shortcomings, I can't find any. He's a winner." Jacksonville State Coach Jim Fuller had only praise for the Hornets. "I want to brag on Alabama State University," said Fuller. "They are a well-coached football team, a conditioned team.

George had his team well-prepared. I'm not so sure I had our team prepared." The Gamecocks had more than twice the total offense as Alabama State, but lost two fumbles and two interceptions and had 141 yards in penalties. Alabama State improved its record to 1-0-1, while Jacksonville State fell to 0-1.
