The Pueblo Council, based in Albuquerque, wants to replace the federal government as operator of the Institute of American Indian Arts, in Santa Fe. The council, if successful in its bid, plans to move the Albuquerque Indian School, now at 12th and Indian School NW, into the Santa Fe complex. Thomas Oxendine, a spokesman for the BIA in Washington, said Thursday, "A decision has not been reached at this point" on the Pueblo Council's request for a contract to operate the stitute of Arts, but estimated the decision will come early next week.

The Pueblo Council is seeking authority to run the Santa Fe school under terms of a 197S federal law known as the Indian Self Determination and Education Assistance Act. This same law was invoked by the Pueblo Council in 1987, when it took over operation of the Albuquerque Indian School from the federal government, which had operated it for the Indians since 1886. The Pueblo Council wants to take over the Indian School and move it to Santa Fe because its members feel the school is old and rundown, and should be moved to the newer Santa Fe quarters. Many of the present Indian School buildings were built before 1915. The school has about 400 students in grades seven through 12.

If the move is approved, plans call for shifting grades 10 through 12toSantaFethisfall, followed by the three lower grades within the next two years. The Santa Fe school now has a capacity of 350 students, but only about 90 are enrolled, leaving room to absorb the students from albuquerque.
