It attracted a large crowd from close proximity, and the glare of the flames was so distinct as to be olearly seen in this city. A special train with 100 hands went up to the scene of faction this morning about 2 oolock; others followed during the day. Wagons were hired, a plank orosslng improvised, and the passengers, mail, express and baggage from the southbound train No.

1 were transferred and brought to the city, making all connections with but a short delay. Five hundred hands will be at work replacing the bridge to-day, to-night and until it is finished, which will be about Wednesday morning. Train No. 2 which left Selma this morniug at 7 o'clock transferred and returned on schedule time this afternoon, making the usual connections. Passenger travel will not be delayed, nor the mails and express.

Freight traffic will be abandoned for about two days or more, except perishable freights which will be sent via Montgomery over the Western road, thence toCalera over theLouisvilleand Nashville road. Supt. J. M. Bridges went up this morniug to see what the extent of the damage was, and have the work pushed to au early completon.

They are going to make a strong fight and say they will distance MoDurhe by long odds. Everything is now iu readiness for the campaign, and Wednesday five speakers will leave this city for points in this county and Wilcox, where they will open up tire on both tbe Democracy and the boodle faction of McDuffle. In company with the speakers there will be a brass band to attract the negroes from far and wide.

On Saturday night this McCali faction will speak opposite the city market house. Thus far McDutfle has not ac bonds. Miss Kate Durr has returned from a name of the nominee, the number of Section forbids the removal of the ballot on which he is nominated, and the number of votes he gets county seats located by law unless the removal be authorized by two-thirds of the voters of the county. pleasant stay in Ashville, N. 7. The Democratic caucus nominee for United States Senator will be Mr. S. Striugfellow was called to Tuskaloosa yesterday morning by a telegram announcing that his brother's condition was not so favorable. Rev.

L. W. Turpin, Cougressman from the Fourth District, spent yesterday in Montgomery. Mr. Jake Tannenbaum was in Montgomery last evening on bis way to Mobile, from an extensive trip over tho Southern theatrical.circuit.

His hosts of friends here are always glad to foe him in Montgomery. Mr. T. S. Davant, General Freight Agent of the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad, aud Mr.

It is said that McDufHe is afraid to speak against his opponent on the debate of public issues of the day. Hot and Still a Bnatin. The negroes are still making the air bine with lamentations over the selection of Hudson to be principal of all the negro schools. Notwithstanding the fact that the City Board of Education have appointed Hudson principal of the colored city school, and on the strongest recommendation and indorsement of the most prominent oolored citizens in the city, the colored people some of them are still kicking vocierously. They don't want Hudson, yet they acknowledge him to be unsually intellectual, and sufficiently qualified to discharge that important position.

It seems that some of the colored citizens who indorsed Hudson for the position, hare withdrawn their names since the malter of the reported scan, dal has beerf-revived and worked up to a considerable pitch. Dodgers were strewn around the city Saturday and to-day calling a meeting of the Afro-Americans in this city is Brown's Chapel, A M. E. Raum, commissioner of tensions, shows that at the end of the fiscal year that 553,744 pensioners were borne on the rolls, of whom 5.1,999 are credited to the civil war, 2392 to the Mexican war, 413 to the survivors of tbe war of 1812, and ISO to the widows of soldiers of the war of 1812. Original claims allowed during the year an increase of 14,716 over the previous year, and G.385 over 18S3. The amount of first payments iu these cases was 832,578,841.

The Assembly contains 33 Senators and 100 Representatives, a total of 133. Several of those recently elected are not Democrats, having beat the regular nominees. The Democratic oaucus, tnerefore, will not contain 133 members, but somewhere between 125 and 130, if all are present who are entitled to participate in its deliberations.
