But the Auburn coaching legend was extraordinarily generous in his praise of the Tigers' cross-state rival "This is kind of hard to say as an Auburn man, but Alabama is a fun team to watch," he said. "They play the game the way it ought to be played.

"I'm not like a lot of Auburn people. I don't hate Alabama. I spent nine years there, and I'm indebted to Alabama because when Coach (Paul) Bryant hired me on his staff, I'd never coached a day in my life. So I have great respect for the University of Alabama and their success and their ville's recruiting efforts his last three years on the job. "Do you realize that in his last three years, Tommy did not get one player in the state of Alabama that Nick Saban offered a scholarship?" Dye admitted he was as surprised as any Tiger fan when Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs hired Chizik.

Dye said his only advice to Jacobs beforehand was to hire who Jacobs thought was the best man for the job, and to not be swayed by boosters or other influential alumni. When he learned later that Jacobs had hired Chizik, Dye said his reaction was, "You've got to be kidding." "You know, it takes a lot of guts to hire a coach who had won five games in two years (at Iowa State). "If they get beat, it will be an upset," Dye told a huge crowd at the Montgomery Quarterback Club's meeting Tuesday night "But you have to be lucky to go undefeated, I don't care how good you are. "If they are not at the top of their game and the team they're playing is at the top of their game, that team will have a chance to win.

The SEC is just too tough a league." Dye said Chizik is the right man at Auburn, and urged Tiger fans to be patient while Chizik and his staff rebuild Auburn into an SEC title contender again. "Alabama's got the right man in there now," Dye said, referring to Tide head coach Nick Saban. "But it took them 20 years. We've got a good coach at Auburn right now, and the fans need to trust him. "The big thing is, Auburn needs to worry about what's happening at Auburn and not worry about what's happening across the state.

Because we can only control what goes on at Auburn. If we are the best that we can be at Auburn, then that'll take care of Alabama." The New York Jets' defensive tackle will miss the rest of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his surgically repaired left knee in the team's opener against Baltimore on Monday night. "Obviously, that's going to be a huge blow for us," coach Rex Ryan said Tuesday.

Jenkins was hurt on the Ravens' sixth offensive play of the Jets' 10-9 loss. The 10-year veteran tore the same ACL midway through last season and used a graft from a hamstring to repair it. Monday was his first regular season game since that injury. Green Bay Packers running back Ryan Grant is out for the season with a right ankle injury, a significant blow to the team after he piled up 1,200 yards in each of the past two seasons. The Packers also placed former first-round pick Justin Harrell on injured reserve and signed running back Dimitri Nance and defensive end Jarius Wynn to fill their spots on the roster headed into Sunday's home game against Buffalo.

Grant was hurt in the second quarter of Green Bay's 27-26 win at Philadelphia on Sunday. Packers coach Mike McCarthy said a day later that Grant's injury involved ligament damage. Dennis Dixon will be Pittsburgh's starting quarterback Sunday at Tennessee, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday, even though the injured Byron Leftwich may return to practice as early as today. Until Leftwich injured a left knee ligament during the final exhibition game Sept. 2, Leftwich was expected to start throughout Roethlisberger's four-game suspension.

Tomlin, who is choosing his starter on a week-to-week basis while Roethlisberger is out, said Dixon did enough things well during a season-opening 15-9 overtime victory over Atlanta to stay in the lineup. Dixon completed 18 of 26 passes for 236 yards and an interception in his second NFL start, shaking off a series of un-derthrown passes early in the game to become more accurate in the second half. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL 2011 season to start in March Major League Baseball's schedule for the 2011 season will eliminate the need for the World Series to be played in November, but it could create havoc in the spring. The season will start on Thursday, March 31, four days earlier than the traditional Monday opener. Only four seasons have begun earlier, and it will mark the first time since 1976 that opening day will be on a Thursday, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

The regular season is scheduled to end on Wednesday, Sept. 28, with the postseason opening three days later. The World Series is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 19, a week earlier than the last two years, with Game 7 on Oct. 27.

COLLEGE GOLF Tide leads at NCAA Fall Preview Just one day after Alabama's Brooke Pancake tied the school and course record with a 7-under-par round of 65, teammate Camilla Lennarth duplicated the feat with a bogey-free 65 in the second round of the NCAA Fall Preview in Bryan, Texas, on Tuesday. The Crimson Tide also took the team lead after 36 holes with an 8- under-par 280 in round two. Alabama is four shots clear of second-place LSU (570) at 10-under-par 566. Pancake, who shot 73 on Tuesday, enters today's final round tied for the individual lead with Vanderbilt's Marina Alex at 6-under-par 138. Auburn carded a 9- over-par 297 Tuesday, tying the Tigers for 10th place.

The Alabama State University golf teams were not very good hosts as the men and women won the Division I ASU Invitational at the Lagoon Park Golf Course. The men came into Tuesday's second round trailing West Georgia by two strokes, but the team's combined 294 score was able to overcome the deficit and pull out a two-stroke victory with a two-day total of 593. Scott Benson was ASU's low scorer and the Division I medalist with an even par 144. The women also entered Tuesday's play in second place after shooting a 326 on the opening day, but came out and fired a tournament-best 310 today to win. Aileen Meredith was ASU's low scorer and was also the Women's Division I medalist with a 10- over 154.

Faulkner University's men's team won the small-school category, while the group captured third place. The Lady Eagles finished second overall in the same category, with junior Mandy Gregg taking top individual honors with a two-day score of 151. The No. 2 ranked Huntingdon men's golf team finished second at the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational, posting a final-round score of 288 on the par 72, Southern Dunes Golf Course in Haines, Fla. The Hawks' three-day total of 868 was 10 strokes behind tournament champion Greensboro.

Chase Blaich paced the Hawks in the final round, firing a three-under par round of 69, and finished tied for second place with a total of 211.
