Lem For 223 -DETROIT (AP)-It's a good thing Lem Barney is an easy going guy, otherwise there would be a few armchair quarterbacks around town with split heads. Barney, fourth year cornerback for the Detroit Lions, says he is continually confronted local bars and restaurants by persons strongly critical of his ability. "Some players would go over to them and probably knock them on the head," he grinned. "But being of good nature, I take it." The detractors should be silenced by now, especially af-t Barney's performance Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. He returned five punts, a kickoff, and interception a total of 223 yards 63 yards less than the combined total offense for the two teams as the Lions moved into the National Football Conference playoffs with a 20-0 victory.

(AP) Bob Blackman, 52-year-old head football coach at Dartmouth for the last 15 years, apparently has the inside track on the Illinois football job. The Associated Press, learned Monday night that Blackman had been offered the Illinois Illinois head coaching position.

Blackman, who has a record of 150 victories, 49 losses and 8 ties, guided Dartmouth to a 9-0 record this last season including the Lambert Trophy which is the symbol of football supremacy in the East. If Blackman does get the job, he will replace Jim Va-lek who was fired as the lllini coach after a four-year tenure. Also in the running for the job was Lou McCullough, an assistant under Woody Hayes of Ohio State. McCullough apparently lost out to Black-man. Earlier in the week, Alex Agase, head coach at Northwestern and a former Illinois All-American, pulled out of consideration.

Agase said he was happy at Northwestern where he led the Wildcats to a tie for second place in the Big Ten with a 6-1 record. Gene Vance, Athletic Director at Illinois, refused to tip his hand as to the lllini future coach. Vance refused to state if a new coach would be named before Christmas. I'm a pretty easy going guy and it doesn't bother me much as it would some Erich Barnes, a corner-backing colleague with the Cleveland Browns, also had an outstanding day Sunday to close out his 13th season. He set up a touchdown with an interception, blocked a field goal, and made five unassisted tackles in a 27-13 triumph over Denver. Other fine defensive performances Sunday were turned by San Diego linebacker Pete Barnes and San Francisco cornerbacks Jim Johnson and Bruce Taylor. Barnes had five solo tackles in a 31-, 13 romp past Kansas! City, while Johnson and Taylor stood out in a 38-8 rout of Oakland that brought the 49ers the NFC West Championship. Hayes Honor Landry admitted.

"But five weeks makes a lot of difference. I felt we could turn it around but I didn't visualize it this way. The club is playing as well as it has in the last three years." EARL GETS REVENGE Also considered for the weekly award were quarterback Earl Morrall of the Baltimore Colts, quarterback Roman Gabriel of the Los Angeles Rams, receiver Dick Gordon of the Chicago Bears and running back John Fuqua of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Morrall, the aging passer who was the subject of considerable derision when the Colts lost to the New York Jets in Super Bowl III, gained a measure of revenge by leading Baltimore to a 35-20 victory over the Jets. Morrall hit on 18 of 33 passes for 348 yards and four touchdowns, and obviously made Coach Don McCaffetfy a happy man.

"He's taken so much abuse over that one game," said McCafferty, "it's really great to see him beat the Jets." Gabriel guided the Los Angeles Rams to four con-secutive first-half scoring drives in a 31-3 victory over the New York Giants, Gordon grabbed nine passes for 119 yards in a 24-3 triumph over New Orleans and Fuqua rushed for 218 yards in 20 carries in a 30-20 loss to Philadelphia. With Detroit ahead only 3-0, Barney returned the second half opening kickoff 74 yards to set up a Lions field goal. Early in the fourth quarter he returned a punt 65 yards to set up a touchdown pass, then about a minute later he intercepted a pass and sprinted cross-field for a 49-yard touchdown run. The graduate of Jackson State College in Mississippi, who was Detroit's No. 2 draft choice in 1967, has played in the Pro Bowl game each of his three seasons. CITE ERICH BARNES "I don't really think I've played any differently this year than before," Barney explained.

"I've had a couple title in the National Conference and a home playoff berth in the NFC semifinals against Detroit. IMPORTANT TO US It was the fifth consecutive victory in a late bid for the title by the Cowboys, and Landry singled Hayes out for special attention. "He's been outstanding the past 3-4-5 weeks," said Landry. "He's very important to us." Hayes and Morton, who also connected with rookie Reggie Rucker for a touchdown pass while completing 13 of 17 passes for 349 yards, have been two of the keys to a resurgent Cowboy team that five weeks ago seemed out of contention and listlesswith a 5-4 record. But it's a different team now that the Lions will face Saturday.
