necessary But last year a plaintiff in Shelby County suc cessfully sued the commission ers there because of an accident on a county road That court action changed the local minds and they asked for work might begin within six months on a road that would ei ther follow the US 41 route through the Lafayette area or would come directly to Lafay ette from Evansville developments stemmed from a news confer ence called by Lt Gov Richard olz of Evansville to an nounce the appointment of State Treasurer John Snyder to conduct a survey of southern In highway needs Snyder was at the news conference A superhighway link between Lafayette and Evansville has long been in the minds of area and state planners One of the strongest plugs for such a route came something like five years ago when Gov Matthew Welsh was winding up his term as governor and presented end review of highway needs At that time Gov Welsh spoke strongly for the need of extending the federal interstate highway program beyond its 1971 termination And he said if the program were extended Indiana should list the Lafayette Evansville route as perhaps its first choice for an interstate highway That stimulated business and political figure in Evansville to organize a campaign for such a road and the group succeeded at one point in getting an engi neering survey made to deter mine the feasibility of making such a route a toll road But nothing ever came of that engineering study Even Kentucky has been in the act calling for extending any superhighway on south from Evansville to link with perhighways in the heart Kentucky CAMPAIGN PROMISE In last campaigning one of the most frequent campaign assertions made by governor candidate Edgar Whitcomb was that such a highway was needed and would be high on the list of his intentions if he were elected Whitcomb was elected and developments apparent ly are implementation of his campaign declarations At press confer ence olz said that Snyder who lives in Washington
