(AP)-James Purvis won't take the field for the Birmingham Vulcans against the invading Chicago Winds Saturday night, but he already has played a vital role in the game, Purvis, business manager of Laborers International Union Local 1317 says striking City of Birmingham workers will not picket Legion Field, site of the game. The organization behind the 18-day-old strike of some 1,000 workers, including the Parks Department that operates the stadium, earlier had asked Vulcans players not to cross picket lines that would be set up. Purvis said after a Thursday meeting with Vulcans officials and player representatives that Bay Minette Plane Crash Claims Pilot BAY MINETTE, Ala. (AP) A small twin-engine plane crashed Friday in a wooded area, killing the, pilot, officers said.

Officials said the plane was believed to have been on a flight from Houston, to Crest-view, Fla. It went down in a sparsely settled area about 15 miles west of Bay Minette. With picket lines set up, the game would have been called off played before empty stands. "The players position played a great deal in our decision," Purvis said. "We considered where they would be if we continued with our plan.

If it hadn't? been for the players, we'd look at this thing in a different light." How does one manage ft make a major suit game with a hand that holds five ap parent losers? Shades of Houdini? Not quite, but pretty close. Georgio Belladonna provides a lively example in a hand played against Indonesia in the 1975 World Championship. South opened a weak two bid (6-12 points and a six card suit) and North raised directly to game.

West liked his chances, but he didn't dare a double. Usually a dou ble based primarily on trump length doesn't gain any points. Declarer is warned ot the situation and if he doesn't turn 500 into 200, he may well turn down one into a doubled game. Dummy's ace took West's club king and when East dis carded on the heart king, it was time for some fancy steps. How was declarer to avoid losing two hearts, a club and a diamond? A low club was led from dummy and East's jack won the trick.

East's spade shift was won by declarer's ace and a heart was led to dummy. The club nine was led to West's king, declarer discarding a spade. West returned a spade and declarer ruffed. Dummy's two high diamonds were cashed and dummy's good club eight provided tor a diamond discard while West followed suit helplessly. Belladonna's last three cards were the A-9-8 of hearts and he had lost only two tricks.

West's last three cards were the J-10-7 of hearts. A diamond was led from dummy and when declarer ruffed with the eight. West was trapped. West overruffed with the 10, but was forced to lead into declarer's A-9 to relinquish the last two tricks. 100 Hurt In Boston Accident BOSTON AP) Three rapid transit trains all going in the same direction collided in a chain reaction during the evening rush hour Friday, injuring more than 100 persons.

Hospital officials said few of the injuries were serious. Two persons were admitted to hospitals with fractured legs and possible multiple fractures. Many of the others had facial cuts. Martin Bander, a spokesman for the nearby Massachusetts General Hospital, said about 85 people were treated there and two were admitted. Thirteen were treated at Boston City Hospital and three people were taken to Beth Israel Hospital.

All three trains had four cars and were headed from Cambridge into Boston. The collision occurred just inside a tunnel between the Charles Street and Park Street stations on the Red Line which Connects Cambridge with Boston and Quincy to the south. The tunnel links the above-ground Charles Street station with Park Street underground. California Is Rocked By Quake OROVILLE, Calif. (AP) -A series of sharp earthquakes -jolted this gold country town Friday, damaging buildings and injuring 10 to 15 persons, officials said.

The nearby Oroville drm, the world's tallest earthen dam, was not damaged, an official said, but the plaster cracked in his office near the dam. Sidewalks buckled in Oroville, a Sierra foothills town of 15,000 persons, and glass from broken windows littered the streets. Electricity was disrupted for a short time, and some county roads were closed by falling boulders and rock slides. Initial reports said injuries were relatively minor. Some were caused by falling debris and others were suspected heart attacks brought on by the -quakes.

The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena said the biggest quake measured 6.1 on the Richter scale, which meant it was capable of causing severe damage. (The institute intially said the quake measured 6.4 but later revised the figure to 6.1.) The quakes were felt over a 200-by-300-mile strip of northern California and western Nevada, but damage reports were limited to Oroville, a 125-year-old town which is the county seat of rural Butte County about 125 miles northeast of San Francisco.
