"The biggest difference between stations is in numbers," said Conway. "I doubt if you would see any of the larger stations covering any story with less than two people. At times, all three of us here have to go out on our own." Turnover is another production problem, according to Conway, who often looks up from his desk to see new faces In back of cameras or in the control room.

"Our station is almost constantly training somebody new," he said. "Most of it is behind the scenes and it can make for some interesting happenings. But, no one makes mistakes on purpose. And, when we have a good newscast, everybody feels good because it is a total team effort." When Conway first began, WSLA was still using film on its news programs and it meant returning to the station early in the afternoon to process it. Now, tape is the heart of the evening newscast and it has helped make it more timely.

WSLA executives are hoping to build a "tall tower" in Lowndes County soon and if it materializes, Conway expects 10 p.m. newscasts as well as weekend news shows. Until that time, he will continue to be almost a one-man news department. An introvert by nature, Conway said he has been trying to appear "less serious" on the air "because that seems to be the major complaint about me. They say I don't smile enough." Of course, he added, if anybody ever offered him a "Dan Rather deal" he'd have more than enough reason to beam from ear to ear.

And in many of those roles she was sexy, sultry and bad. "The most interesting characters to play are strong characters," she said. "And strong means self-assured, selfish, self-seeking. I suppose I play them well because I'm a pretty strong person myself." 7:00 "The Nude Bomb" Adames.
