of things to come that for the first time in memory the three major television networks are interested in if not exactly soliciting manuscripts by unknown writers The change of attitude stems from what is being referred to as "cultural excursions into dramatic productions which range from the works of established playwrights to frank experimentation Interest in unknowns unpublished writers without a list of was greeted with a certain amount of cynicism by insiders It has been almost routine for a producer eager for publicity to proclaim need for new faces with fresh Manuscripts Returned Each time such a pronouncement came along unsung writers all over the country hopefully sent manuscripts along to networks This was followed by bitter disillusionment when the manuscripts were returned Currently however the traffic in manuscripts at all three networks is unusually large CBS is really scouting fresh ideas for its NBC is devoting Sunday afternoon time for experimentation in various sorts of drama ABC has its off to a fine start Sign Four Writers At this writing however no gold has been found in unsolicited material Closest has been the signing of four young writers without commercial television experience for some productions But all have extensive writing credits two have had off-Broadway productions and one some success as a playwright in his native Italy Thomas McAvity who heads Sunday afternoon project admitted been getting jillions of unsolicited manuscripts" Barbara Schultz editorial head said hundreds have been flowing in there Hubbell Robinson executive producer of "Stage 67" said that possibly because the series was using big writing names only about 50 or 60 people had sent in unsolicited material Give Legal Reason The reason manuscripts are returned unopened is a legal one Should the author of a drama returned with a routine rejection note later see something like his plot on the screen he might cry plagiarism and race to his office The networks will open only those manuscripts accompanied by a legal release "But all manuscripts submitted in proper form are read and said Miss Schultz Most unsolicited material arrives in the form of plays written for the stage form of television is different and hard for new she said play form is simpler and most of them just understand building around the commercial Variety Of Items Some hopefuls submit short stories Others write outlines in all sorts of forms and still others just want to sit down with someone and tell them their wonderful ideas One sent in an eight-year-diary with a note suggesting it could be adapted into something very exciting Unfortunately just about everything sent in proves unusable But the mere fact that net work personnel are reading manuscripts is a step forward A few seasons back the best advice for the hopeful was to get a job any job in a network try to make some friends on the inside who would read his work or better pass it along to someone in authority who would Indian Had Reason Why Squaw Walked Ed Ames who plays star Fess Oxford-educated Cherokee Indian friend Mingo in "Daniel has become a collector of Indian stories during the frontier-action three highly successful seasons This is his latest: cowboy came upon an Indian brave riding a pony A heavily burdened squaw walked beside him the squaw asked the cowboy got no Ames related "Daniel airs Thursdays in color on NBC-TV -L TONIGHT ON $10 BARBARA EDEN is a headstrong member of the comedy team when she joins Tom and Dick for a rollicking hour of fun 9:00 PM IN COLOR
