She's not yet a household name, but so what? "I've had my best shot, and I went the distance," she smiles. Robbins, in Hawaii for a short vacation, is co-composer of "Gonna Fly Now (Theme From 'Rocky')," a currently popular tune and the best competition against "Evergreen (Love Theme From 'A Star Is Born')" during the past Oscar race. "I don't see how you can be nominated for an Academy Award and end up being a loser," she reasons. "Just being nominated is winning. And certainly, losing to Paul Williams and Barbra Streisand (who collaborated on the Oscar-winning song) is no defeat." Robbins is a poet turned songwriter. Her partner, Carol Connors, writes both words and music; to date, Robbins adheres strictly to lyrics. "I feel like a winner." she optimistically reflects about her "Gonna Fly Now" hit. "It was an uphill fight all the way, to get the chance to write the words for the song. There are only 30 words in all my son counted em and I've had my best shot, and I went the distance." Bill Conti, who created the music for the movie "Rocky," had heard about the team of Rob bins and Connors and had asked United Art ists, the studio releasing the film that starred Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire (which eventually won the Academy Award as Best Picture), if the women could do 1 the lyrics. No. said the studio brass, who felt that women creating lyrics for a boxing, macho-type film, just wouldn't do. "It was almost like winning a contest," Robbins recalls. "Bill asked us to submit words. And some studio writers also had to submit lyrics. Then there was a run-off of sorts no one knew who wrote what, it was handled anonymously and in the end, the producers picked our lyrics. It was simply fantastic." "Rocky" was the first taste of exposure and success for Robbins. "Oh, I've done a bit of obscure movie music, and I have a few more coming out in the next few months. But talk about a million to one shot. "I've been writing poetry all my life since I was able to hold a pen in is a lot easier than poetry, but there are differences. When you write lyrics, you cannot be too wordy. Lyrics punctuate the music, so you can't say too much. For me, though, it was a natural transition. "As it turned out, the 30 words for 'Rocky' were the most difficult to write. The directors and producers wanted a song that marked the transition of Rocky, from being a loser to a winner." And the script still is being written. As Robbins puts it: "The interesting thing about 'Rocky' is the fact that it turned a lot of nobodies into somebodies. You really got your best shot, and went the distance, if you had a part in the film. Sly (Sylvester Stallone) agrees Rocky was going the distance, for each and every one of us." Robbins met Connors several years ago. "We ADULT MOVIES l TVinTtf rrTTF IfTTlTl & "COUPL E NEXT DOOR" if PLUS "DADDY'S BABY" W 412 S. Are they rich now? "We've had estimates," she laughs. "Everyone thinks I'm a multi-millionaire. But I'm waiting. Compared to my income before, yes, I am a millionaire, relatively speaking." Robbins and Connors have yet another "major" film due this summer: A Walt Disney feature cartoon called "The Rescuers," for which they wrote three tunes together and a fourth in collaboration with Sammy Fain, veteran Hollywood composer of such hits as "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing" and "Secret Love." (The movie will open at the Royal and Royal The Honolulu Advertiser entertainment Sunset Drive in on June 23). "We actually wrote music for 'The Rescuers before 'Rocky.' but animated films usually take a long time before being released." she says. "Shelby Flint sings all of the tunes in the sound-rack." The Disney film is about a group of mice, who operate a rescue-aid society. The voices of Eva Gabor, Bob Newhart and Geraldine Paige are featured. It's an adventure for kids and adults, and I would say that the movie is every bit as captivating as 'Cinderella' and 'Snow White. "1 took 20 of my adult friends to see it, and they all walked away captivated." ' And reaction to her co-composition, principally "Tomorrow Is Another Day," also is high and mighty. "I tell you I feel like a winner," she enthuses. With such high spirits, she ought to get a TKO decision or maybe the glass slipper will fit her foot. Have a problem you can't solve?
