Storm Is Severe Near Iowa Line One Killed, One Missing in North Missouri; Tornado Damage IB Extensive. MARYVILLE. Off, 9. One woman wns killed and extensive property damage caused last night as tornadic frinds cut a swath 18 miles long in an area just south of the Iowa border. It first struck just west of Parnell covering a path about a mile wide.

Prom fhere it moved eastward, hitting a mile north of Worth which was xvrcrkrd by a tornado 10 years apo, and then south of Grant. Mrs. Frank Porter was found dead in the rubble of her farm home eight miles southeast of Grant City. Her husband was injured and was hospitalized. Besides extensive damage to homes and farm buildings in the path of the blow utility lines were downed throughout the area.

The St. Joseph Power Light and the Nodaway-Worth Electric Cooperative had crews in the area throughout the night. Three round barns on the stock farm of Ben Jones, noted race horse trainer, were unroofed.

A pickup truck driven by Pete Auten was overturned six miles south of Grant City. Mrs. Auten, the couple's son, Leslie, 12, and granddaughter Vickl Hamblin, 5, were rushed to a hospital at Albany. Auten, hidden in the wreckage, was not found until an hour later. He was reported in a critical condition today in a Maryville hospital.

A search was under way for John Gabbert reported missing in the Parnell-Oxford area. Officers said he was unreported after leaving Parnell last night for Oxford. Reports of damage mounted as farmers and Insurance men checked Into wrecked buildings and other structures moved off their foundations. The Allyn Breits were eating dinner at their home south of Parnell when a heavy timber came through the side of the house. Mrs.

and Mrs. James Applebury, Dawn, admitted to Mercy hospital on October remains in the hospital. VISITED IN COLUMBIA Ben Pfaff and son, Leon Pfaff and daughter, Mrs. Leonard Posey spent Wednesday in Columbia with their wife and mother, Mrs. Pfaff, a patient at Ellis-Fischel hospital.

The condition of Mrs. Pfaff, who underwent major surgery last Friday, continues to improve satisfactorily'. They were accompanied to Columbia by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Damm Jr.

9 days ago Earl Buetow, a 39-year-old unemployed laborer, married a widow with eight children. The family was in need when Buetow's wife decided to ask the county welfare office for help. Buetow warned her yesterday he would commit suicide if she went for help. She returned from the welfare office to find Buetow dead with a pistol wound in the mouth. He left a note saying he was leaving all his insurance to his wife.

C.H.S. STUDENTS TO CONDUCT MAGAZINE SALE A magazine sales campaign sponsored by the student council and conducted by all students of Chillicothe Junior-senior high school will begin Oct. 16 and continue until Oct. 23. This is the one money- making project sponsored by this organization.

Interest and rivalry between groups for largest sales are rewarded by various kinds of prizes. The townspeople have always been cooperative in helping this project by giving new and renewal subscriptions to their favorite magazines to the students. The public will be contacted by an eager salesman from C.H.S. within a short time. Money from this project Is used in activities and gifts which benefit the entire student body.

Among these have been, beautiful pictures for each room, intercommunication system, public address system used at school and at football games, student handbooks for students just entering C.H.S. Wildcats 4-H club, who served refreshments and helped with the program, led the group singing. An election meeting for Cream Ridge township will be held at 8 tonight In the Center school. Mrs. Richard Hargrave and Charles Casebeer will be in charge of the meeting and the Neighborly-Neighbors extension club and the Show Me 4-H club will assist in the program.

CUBA, Oct. 9 A heavily irmed ex-convict who kidnaped an Jlderly farm couple, robbed a hotel and stole a car yesterday apparently has made his way out of the area. The Missouri Highway Patrol reported last night It had been un- ible to find any trace of Robert Charles Sypniewski, 27, or the stolen car in which he was last seen. Mr. and Mrs.

Clarence Declue, for whom Sypniewski had worked since his recent parole from San Quentin prison in California, were forced to accompany' him in the stolen car but escaped unharmed. Declue seized one of Sypniewski's weapons while the ex-convict was watching for police while driving in Cuba and stunned him with a blow to the head. The Declue couple fled but Sypniewski drove away in the car. The crime spree began when Sypniewski broke into the farm home of Robert Steely, took five pistols and rifles and Steely's car. He then robbed the Midway cafe and hotel of $60 and tried to force the cashier, Mrs.

Jean Adkins, into the car. She broke away from him and fled. Sypniewski then went to the Declue farm, demanded $2,000 and, upon being told there was no money, forced the Declues to go with him. Declue said 1 Sypniewski told them he was driving them to the city dump to kill them. Sypniewski had served years in the California prison for armed robbery.

Five Young People Die As Speeding Car (rashes And a Sixth la Injured Near Birch Tree, Mo. BIRCH TREE, Oct. 9 speeding car crashed out of control on U. s. 60 near Birch Tree last night, killing five young people and juring a sixth.

The Highway Patrol said the driver was James Manuel Suther- landf, 22, of Winona, oldest one in the group. He was killed along these four passengers: Donald Ritchey, 16, of Birch Tree; Rose Ann Deathrldge, 15, of Eminence; Maylou Magness, 18, of Eminence, and Richard Lee Yoder, 17, of Winona. Injured was Bernice Dooley, 15, of Eminence. She was taken to St. Francis hospital at Mountain View.

The accident was about two miles east of Birch Tree at 9:20 p. m. The patrol said the car failed to make a slight curve and turned over several times. AR11 six persons were thrown out of the vehicle. Birch Tree is in Shannon county in south central Missouri.

The squadron on Sept. 22 was pre- sented with an Aviation Safety Award from the Chief of Naval Operations for the fiscal year 1958, ending June 30. The award, a citation and brdnze plaque represents the squadron's achievement of 7,741 flight hours without injury to personnel or significant damage to aircraft. The squadron is presently preparing for a future deployment to the Far East.
