Monday Evening August 7 1950 IiAAYETTE JOURNAL AND COURIER Illinois to Oppose Rose Giants Win Bowl Pact Alterations 2 Shutouts CHAMPAIGN H1M Aug 6 Illinois emerged today as the Big Ten school that may toss a monkey wrench Into negotiations for re newal of the controversial Rose Bowl pact with the Pacific Coast conference Conceivably the Western Conference's second largest institution could stop a renewal cold and 1 1 the five year closed shop pact that expires Jan 1 1951 Representatives of the two leagues will meet In December to talk about a new agreement The Pacific Coast is understood to want a change in the present terms that Will permit a Big Ten to compete once in every two years instead of once in every three But George Stoddard president of Illinois revealed that he is op posed to any change In the three year rule He said the restriction was a "safeguard" toward any tinge of over emphasis on football Within the Big Ten Stoddard emphasized that he was expressing a purely personal view but his stand was endorsed by Dean Robert Browne the Illi nois faculty athletic representative VOTE WAS 7 3 When Big Ten representatives voted approval of renewal talks at Madison Wis last June Browne voted with a 7 to 3 majority How ever Browne at the time made it plain that he was reserving the right to change his vote Minnesota whose officials dis like the Rose Bowl agreement and Northwestern and Wisconsin voted against renewal negotiations If Illinois joined these three in De cember the approval margin would be uit to 6 to 4 Observers believed it possible that Illinois could swing another Big Ten school into line with the dissenters if it chose to make a fight against a pact A 5 to 5 vote Would mean no new contract The Pacific Coast conference whose teams have yet to win a Rose Bowl game against the Big Ten has good reason for wanting a change to two year competition for the rival league schools The Coast which sends its champion to the Bowl has been beaten once by a Big Ten runner up under the three year rule and conceivably could suffer the ig nominy of playing a third place team Under a two year rule the Coast would be more likely to meet the Big Ten champion and at least do no worse than face the runner up Stoddard however said he felt the change would be a mistake ONCE IN THREE "I personally feel that once every three years is adequate representa tion by any Big Ten he said personal feeling is that whenever the bars are lowered to allow a team to play in the Rose Bowl once every two years it is time to call a halt the present rule every player has a chance to play in the Rose Bowl one time That is fair and Stoddard said he would not in struct Browne how to vote in the December meeting But Illinl ob servers said it would be foolish to believe that views will not influence the posi tion If he bucks the pact Stoddard will have a powerful ally in Min nesota which dislikes the agree ment regardless of how often a Big Ten team can trek to Pasa dena If dissenting votes are needed Minnesota might persuade Michi gan State new member of the conference to join its side Minne sota was a prime mover in getting Michigan State into the con ference Lafayette CC Swimmers in 001 3 AA9 in I 2B riend HR Kokos riend Gar Tk a I wr i Stimweiss DeMars and Lenhardt Wahl MitcncocK ana ain phia 8 St Louis 8 2 Garver 3 Shantz 5 uarver snantz 'd 2 innings (faced one in 6 Schetb (3 7) Wins Japan Swim Duel 46 1 7 1TOKYO Monday Aug 7 Hirronosnin uruhashi cracked three of his own world swimming records and twice beat Australian John Marshall of Yale in a three day Japan swim which the team won 46 17 uruhashi won the 800 meter freestyle race in last wind Couplet Streets Are Easing City Traffic CHICAGO (UP) The Ameri can Municipal association reports that cities are taking to the idea of one way street to re duce accidents relieve congestion and Speed traffic In simplest form the street coufflet comprises two parallel one way streets a block apart cutting through?
