Sorta hate tow mention it but many fans are interested in what you think (after one of the duties of a coach is to come out with a sober' authoritative opinion on whatever the basket fan is argu ing about) Quite a few an swers have come in but many are still out Three groups which are definitely against the new rules: The lazy or plumsy giants sports writers who take so long in their note books they raise their hoses from scoring un til the noise of the crowd forces them to rear up and holler made and officials who pre fer to amble slowly up and down the floor BROOKSTON DIVIDED One of the most peculiar angles on the poll has been the divided sentiment at Brookston 15 of Coach 18 man squad like the new rules and at the start of the season so did Victor himself Now however he moans that he must vote against his boys how he explains it in part: fans like the rules as shown by their attendance But because of limited material I am forced to use a rather small varsity squad or lose most of my games It seems that something is hay wire with the rulq makers Only a short time ago they cut the games to 8 minute quarters in order to eliminate 20 minute halves with the excus of help ing the boys Now they make the boys play faster My boys train better than the average but I am sure they although voting for the new rules are more tired after games now than they were be fore We have used mostly a fast offense fop years and cannot see much advantage I have coached for many years and to my knowl edge only one boy has been in any way injured This was caused by allowing him to play too soon after a bad cold I hoping I am wrong in thinking there is in the new rules I also might add that I do not have a tall center We used to tell our Smith Tremble! thumbs down today on any general revision of the rules but suggested two changes which they said would make the game more spectacular through increased scoring Lou Little Columbia university coach and chairman of the rules committee which met today said the group agreed on these recom mendations: 1 That when the ball goes out of bounds or becomes dead with in 15 yards of the side line it be put in play 15 yards from the side line The present rule pro vides that the ball be brought out 10 yards AVORS PASSING TEAM 2 That a forward pass which touches an ineligi ble man behind the line of scrim mage be called incomplete and counted as a down Under present rules when such a condition oc curs the offensive team loses the ball The group also asked for a clearer interpretation of the rule relating to intentional grounding of a forward pass Little and Dana Bible Texas university coach will present the suggestions to the rules commit tee of the National Collegiate Ath letic association Pete have been known for many years as out standing handlers of boys Like Abe Pete has always been against the state tourney as being too hard on the boys Yet recently Vaughan came right out and said he liked the new rules Masters also likes them as do his boys for the following reasons: think it evens things up makes it fairer between the teams As long as my boys are in good physical shape the faster play do a bit of harm However I think teams have to play so fast My boys the race horse team a lot of writers who seen us claim we Bob Hopper Reynolds athletic director is against the rules and his boys voted with him Says Hopper: my boys and I prefer the center jump It does not rush the boys so much and does give them a little time to think things over after a score has been made Hopper thinks the new game may be a ntue too strenuous PLAYER LIKES In favor of the though is at least one Stockwell Warren Ashby Ashby says "As a member of the Stock well team I have played in all nine games so far usually going through the whole game and per sonally I am greatly in favor of the new style of play The gams has been speeded up in tempo and a team must be constantly on the alert to attain any measure of success Heretofore a team sporting two or three tall men was able to control the tip nearly all the time and generally emerg ed the victor The new rule elim inating the center jump done away with the tall boy be cause he is invaluable around the backboards in spite of the little man front with his seems as if this is just what was needed to bring basketball up to where it should be by providing far more equality between the big ger teams and smaller teams" Of course everybody knows Piggy opinion about the rules: "I don't care what they do so long as they leave those bas kets up STAGGS IN AVQR Alva Staggs of Monticello and the old man of Indiana has found time be tween thanking his great bunch of boys for their aggressiveness and willing attitude to come out in praise of the new rules Alva admits: tell the truth I was at first quite skeptical about taking out the center jump To me it seemed like playing foot ball without the kickoff or sen timental reasons I want to see the center jump taken out But now with the season half gone I am beginning to believe more than ever that minor changes will not hurt the game so long as there are baskets' at each end of the court to fire at date I have talked with several coaches and in nearly every case they tell me they are playing to larger crowds This must mean that the change is popular with the average fan and he is the one that pays the bill True the boys MUST get into condition with the Increased speed But quite a few years ago the boys played 20 minute halves and sometimes three year of 1937: TENNIS
