montgomeryadvertiser.com STATE COLLEGE FOOTBALL 5B Sunday, October 9, 2005 Tuskegee puffs, blows Morehouse down By Travis Jarome Special to the Advertiser COLUMBUS, Ga. The Tuskegee coaching staff stressed the importance of scoring first in Saturday's game with Morehouse. "We talked about it before the game," coach Rick Comegy said. "We knew we needed to score first. We knew that if Morehouse scored first, that we were going to be in for a barnburner.

Luckily for us we scored that first touchdown." Tuskegee scored first and second, third and fourth, too. The Golden Tigers reeled off the game's first four touchdowns en route to a 34-24 victory over Morehouse in front of 21,797 at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium. Senior defensive back Ramon Nickerson recalled that discussion and set the tone. He blocked the punt of Morehouse's Adam Williams less than three minutes into the contest.

The block set the offense up inside the Maroon Tigers 10-yard line. "It really wasn't a called block from the sidelines, but 'Nick' (Ramon) thought he had enough ground inside," Comegy said. "He left his man, really, and went in "That adds another key for us offensively." The Golden Tigers scored on their next possesion, following an 11-play, 66-yard drive. Huff connected with junior wide receiver Lorenzo Crawford for a 21 yard touchdown. Crawford turned in the play of the day with a diving catch the ball stuck to his fingertips that left Tuskegee ahead 14-0.

Tuskegee (5-1, 4-1 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) struck again on special teams, as Kenneth Henderson ran a punt return 81 yards for an apparent touchdown. One problem: The fourth passing with 93 yards rush-' ing. He was named Tuskegee's most valuable player. "Kevin is an outstanding athlete and he made some great checks today as well," said Comegy. "A lot of the calls today didn't come from the sidelines, with Ke-: vin doing a lot of things by himself.

He can drop that, ball in there anytime he wants to." John David Washington, son of Oscar Award-winning actor Denzel Washington, led all rushers with 129 yards and was named More-. house's MVP. Tuskegee hosts SIAC-. leading Fort Valley State (6-1, 6-0) next Saturday. there and blocked it.

It was a turning point in the game and set the momentum for us." Result of the blocked punt touchdown on offense. The Golden Tigers scored on their first play from scrimmage following the play. Kevin Huff hit tight end Eric Arogbofa for a 5-yard touchdown pass. "The tendency on offense when we get down on the goal line is to run the ball," said Huff, who was 19-of-26 passing for 222 yards and three touchdowns. "We wanted to come out with some play action and get our tight end involved in the offense," he said.

defense dominated the first half, holding the Maroon Tigers to just 67 yards. Morehouse managed to cross midfield only twice both stalled at the Tuskegee 49-yard line. Following a second Echeverry field goal that made it 34-0, Morehouse (2-4, 1-4 SIAC) began its rally. Backup quarterback Ruben DuPree threw a touchdown pass to Ravenell DuPree to cut the lead to 34-6. Ruben DuPree later ran 9 yards to cut it to 34-14 with four minutes remaining.

The Maroon Tigers added a safety and a last-minute touchdown. Huff added to his 222 of 19 Tuskegee penalties brought the play back. "Nobody has been punting to us all year, and we finally got a chance to return some," Henderson said. Tuskegee fumbled away that drive, but added another touchdown late in the second quarter. Huff connected with a diving Calvin Russell on a 19-yard TD pass to make it 21-0.

"Big plays were a plus for us today and we were happy about that," Comegy said. Roosevelt Echeverry connected on a 25-yard field goal as time expired in the first halffora24-01ead. Southern tied the game in the second quarter when quarterback Joseph Lewis scored on a 3-yard run. Field goals of 38 and 29 yards gave Alabama a 13-6 lead at halftime. "They really had us figured out in the second half.

They did some things we weren't prepared for and kept us off balance. And I think I called a poor game in the second half." Golson said offensive mistakes cost the Hawks in the second half. "They made some good adjustments, but we made plenty of mistakes to kill our drives," Golson said. "That was the difference. Other than a fumble on our first possession, we didn't make many mistakes in the first half." Huntingdon's offensive presence was felt early.

The Hawks scored on two of their four first-half possessions. Even on the first possession, which ended in a fumble, the Hawks were able to move the ball. The Hawks used a 10-play, 73-yard drive to reach the Trinity 12 before a fumble ended the threat. "That fumble cost us points, but it could have cost us more," Turk said. "It could have changed the momentum or hurt our confidence.

But it didn't. We came back with a solid touchdown drive and we followed up with a good two-minute drill to get a field goal." The Hawks found the end zone on their third possession. Golson connected with Brode-rick Smith on a 6-yard play to cap the six-play, 70-yard drive. Cody Lange kicked the extra point to give Huntingdon a 7-6 lead with 4:20 left in the first half. The Hawks added their final score at the halftime buzzer, driving 60 yards in less than 80 seconds.

Lange drilled a 35-yard field goal to make it 10-6 at the half. Altman kicked a 25-yard field goal to make it 10-9 with 14:49 left in the game. Golson finished with 217 yards on ll-of-21 passing. Mark Colson had six receptions for 107 yards and Jacob Godwin had three catches for 87 yards. Ja-maal Jemison, Stephen Whitehead and Hodge Patterson each had seven tackles to lead the Hawk defense.

As it has in the first four games, the Huntingdon defense rose to almost every challenge.

Trinity drove inside the Hawk red zone four times yet managed one touchdown. The Tigers gained 161 yards on their first two possessions, marching inside the Huntingdon 10 each time. But two red zone appearances only netted a pair of Kelly Altman field goals (19 and 22 yards). "The defense played a heck of a game," Golson said. "The defense bent but it didn't break until late in the game.

As an offense, we couldn't ask for any more of the defense than what they did today. But we couldn't get things going on offense in the second half." The Huntingdon offense racked up 235 yards in the first half but managed 63 in the second half.
