More than 14,000 health care providers-physicians, hospitals, nursing homes, pharmacists and others-participate in the Medicaid program in Alabama. For several years, payments have been made only once a month to those delivering services to Medicaid eligibles.

"We know providers will be pleased with this change, "said Mike Horsley, Medicaid commissioner. "They will be paid more quickly for services they deliver to Medicaid recipients." In any one month, about 300.000 low income people qualify for services through the Medicaid program in Alabama. In the great majority of cases, claims will be paid in considerably less than 30 days.

The change in the payments schedlue will assist the Medicaid agency in adhering to federal requirements for timeliness in payment of claims.
