Those salaries are based on the City Charter provision that the Council be a "part-time" body, Akahane said. However, he said, despite being paid for part-time work, Council members are working full time at their jobs. The Council has a citizens' committee studying whether a Charter amendment calling for a full-time Council should be put on the ballot this year.

Fasi is opposed to that move. If the committee recommends that the proposed amendment go on the ballot, Akahane said, a related action will be taken: "to ask the people of this county for equity in the salaries of Council members."
