Hilo'Kona bus scheduled 20 off these short sets Another jit itable su cosumers market basket HILO Big Iiland transit system officials have scheduled a Hele-On bus test run from Hilo to Kona tomorrow for evaluation as a regular part of the system. The test is being made in response to numerous requests for a Hilo-to-Kona run that would return the same day, transit manager Barney Henor said Wednesday. Hele-On currently runs a bus from Kona to Hilo and return on a daily, except Sunday, schedule.

That bus is heavily used on the route that runs from South Kona through Waimea and down the Hamakua coast to Hilo. Transit officials also are anticipat ing a heavy demand for a Hilo to Kona run when school is over. The proposed route would allow persons in East Hawaii to ride to the beach and recreation areas in South Koha-la and Kona. Tomorrow's test run will depart from Hilo at 8.30 a.m. and make stops at Waimea, Hapuna BeBch, Puako, Anaehoomalu Bay and Kai-lua.

It will start its return trip from Kailua at 6 p.m. Persons interested in taking the ride should phone the transit office for reservations. One 42-passenger bus will be operated and the round-trip fare is $4. business for big and little girls. deal.

By DAVID SMOLLAR Advertiser Staff Writer Food shoppers will find prices slightly lower on this week's Advertiser market guide, with bread, fillet iku, ice cream and cheese being the best buys. But consumers will discover that eice, butter, papaya and coffee prices have climbed.

Each week the State Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the State Program for the Unemployed, checks Oahu supermarkets The department uses four lists of items and stores, rotating them in a four-week cycle. This week features list No. 1, checking stores in the Ka-piolani and east Honolulu areas. IN ADDITION, beginning with this week's list The Advertiser now calculates the median price for the 40 food items, rather than the average. A median price is the point at which there are as many individual store prices below as above.

For example, the median price for red apples this week is 45 cents a pound, meaning that an equal number of store apple prices are above and below that price. A median rather than average price should give the shopper a better idea how costs at his store stack up against those of other markets. When a straight average is used, an out-of-line price at one store can markedly affect the average. Bread and flour prices dropped sharply in median price this week because of heavy promotion by Hawaiian Flour Mills. The median price of bread is 40 cents, a nickel drop from the previous survey median Bread can be found from 38 to 40 cents at Emjay's, Foodland, Safeway, Gem's and Everybody's.

FLOUR PRICES dropped 15 cents in median cost to 74 cents. But it can be found for as low as 65 cents at Emjay's and Safeway Fillet aku, available at six stores HILO M. Sonomura Contracting Co. is apparent low bidder for Hilo drag strip development and support facilities onstruction, it was an nounced Wednesday. Sonomura bid $832,180 40 to top four other firms Bids were opened by the public works department last week.

The project, in the Panaewa area near Hilo, will include a three-quarter mile long asphaltic concrete drag strip, staging pit, service area, tower, restroom facilities, concession area, bleachers and 280-stall parking lot. The project is being funded through County and State appropriations. Other bids were Yamada and Sons, Isemoto Contracting, James W. Glover, and Constructors Hawaii, $1,287,000 The project was held up several months until right of access to the parcel where the strip will be located was settled. Many residents also protest construction of the facility because of noise that will be generated.

In addition, criticism of the project also has centered on the amount of rainfall in the area, which is near Panaewa farmlots between Hilo and Keaau. this week, dropped 65 cents per pound to a $2.04 median this week. Only Holiday Mart and Everybody's failed to stock the fresh fish. Ice cream plummeted 10 cents in median cost, to $1.19 per half gallon; American cheese slices dropped 15 cents to $1.10 Best bargains on both items are at Emjay's. In the produce section, tomatoes went down 16 cents in median cost, to 64 cents per pound, due to large supplies locally.

Everybody's came in with a low 39 cent-per-pound price, with Safeway at 49 cents. RICE ROSE nine cents to a median $2.43, although Times, Star and Gem's will save the shopper a few pennies. Butter rose nine cents to a median $1 28, although careful shoppers can save money at Safeway and Foodland. Papayas will be no bargain except at Holiday Mart, where they are priced at 37 cents, 16 cents below the median 53-cent price. Coffee continued its steady rise, up nine cents to a $4.59 median for a three-pound bag Safeway offered a three-pound bag for $4.21, while Times weighted in at $5 09.

The U.S. Labor Department said the index declined one-tenth of 1 per cent from March to April and stood at 182.5 last month, or 5.7 per cent above last year's level.

This means that selected foods which sold for $10 in 1967, the department's "base year," cost 318.25 in April 1976. In addition to the decline in the cereals-bakery products category, last month's food prices also dropped in the meats-poultry-fish group by 1.9 per cent, mainly because of lower beef and pork prices. However, fruits and vegetables rose 4 per cent and the cost of restaurant meals and snacks was up 1.4 per cent.
