Moments later, Spear also asked the council to postpone voting on changing the city's 1989 smoking ordinance because he wants a public hearing first. Cook, a strong proponent of the revised measure, repeatedly called for its adoption. But when the hands went up in favor of postponement, Spear was supported by Head, May, Jinright and Roby. Cook was only supported by Nuckles, Calhoun and Pruitt. An American Cancer Society representative was, pleased that the council majority agreed to hold off.

"I think we see it as a positive step," Gracie Hanchrow, executive director of the Cancer Society's Montgomery metro office, said afterward. Hanchrow said she wants a total ban on smoking in the bars and restaurants. "And we'd love to have the opportunity to take this two weeks to educate our council members and educate our citizens about the dangers of secondhand smoke," she said. Dr. Lee Franklin, a member of the Cancer Society who addressed the council, also was pleased with the delay.

But he added afterward, "I think it's a shame that Montgomery, being the capital city, can't be a leader." Group: No date for meeting From Page 1B home run and we should probably go about this as a two-base hit," he said. "I think we should use the stuff in the resolution as a guideline for all the forming and existing associations, but we should not use it as a formal resolution that goes before the City Council." But Donald Jenkins, chairman of the Gathering of Leaders group, said the associations already do this. "We need the resolution because, without it, it is almost impossible to successfully apply for federal funding," he said. "There are HUD grants available to the city, but we can't claim them because neighborhood associations are not officially recognized by the city." Realtor Sandra Nickel, a BONDS board member, said the events of the meeting gave her mixed emotions. "I am sad because there are many neighborhood associations who deserve to be recognized for all their hard work and unfortunately they will not be able," she said.

"But I am glad because there are people here at our meeting that I have never seen before and it has caused each association to take a deeper look at how we operate." The group did not set a date for the next resolution committee meeting. Show: Magazine ad prices expensive From Page 1B economy in several ways. "The economic impact will affect the merchants and help boost the economy in our area," Willis said. "We expect this to affect all the surrounding areas because of lodging, gasoline, food and other items sold while the attendees are here." The $10,000 will pay for a twopage spread in the Southern Rodder and Northern Rodder magazines, both with nationwide distribution. "People will go to the shows," Jones said.

"If they see the advertisements, they will go to them." Councilman Lewis Washington voted against the advertising measure. "It's the cost I objected to," Washington said. "It's too much of the taxpayers' money to spend, whereas spending $5,000 on advertising would represent the city, and we could put the other $5,000 into local programs to help the underprivileged." The show will feature cash prizes totaling up to $10,000. It will be held along U.S. 231 in Wetumpka city limits, but the exact location hasn't been named..
