82W GREENWOOD, MISS. rt By JOHN COLLINS Staff Writer DEFENSIVE END Leroy Jones had a tune on his mind that wouldn't go away even as the San Diego Chargers trounced the Cleveland Browns Monday night 44-14. It went something like: "We should have been in the Super Bowl last year, but well be there come Jan ary." Jones, the 6-f oot-A, 260-pound Greenwood native is a former baketball and football sensation at Amanda Elzy High School He is now an all-pro pass rusher for the the Chargers during the fall and winter. "Everybody will be out to get us this year," he said in a recent telephone interview. "Last year, the team had some breakdowns on defense in the playoff game against Oakland that cost us the game.

"WE CANT do that and win the big games," the veteran tackier said. "It has taken us two years to realize we have the team to win the Super BowL" Jones says the Chargers have taken care of the defensive problems which may have cost them a trip to New Orleans this past January. The key has been the hiring of former Washington Redskins' head coach Jack Pardee, who was fired at the end of last year's regular season. He was later chosen to coordinated the San Diego defensive unit "Pardee's really what we've needed," Jones said with the certainty of a child who's just found the final piece to a large puzzle. "I see no way we won't go all the way this year.

"We can win," he said. "And we must win every Sunday." JONES, NOW 3L played his college football at Norfolk State. "Craig Max from Greenwood (then with Norfolf, originally a coach at Mississippi Valley State University) came down and recruited me," Jones remembered. Jones left college prior to his senior year. He signed with Edmonton of the Canadian Football League where he played for three years.

He attributes his relative obscurity in his hometown to his stay north of the border. In 1976 he entered the NFL draft and was picked by Los Angeles. He was traded the same year to San Diego, were he has become a first string and all-pro. The "hitting" is taking place despite the absense of several of the Mustangs who are attempting to fight off a virus or nursing injuries suffered during this past Friday night's 38-0 loss to Adams County Christian. The only Mustang who is sidelined with a possibly serious injury is junior lineman Bejae Windham who apparently has ligament damage to the fingers of his right hand. "We don't know yet whether the injury is serious enough to require surgery," said Blanton. "The doctors are looking at We hope it'll be a situation where we can wrap the hand in such a way that he'll be able play." IF THE INJURY is more serious, the 215-pound Windham, who was expected to take over a starting role, may be out for several weeks. Jeff Fondren, a split end-defensive back, is nursing a bruised arm which remains swollen after he was injured in the first quarter of the Adams County game.

Fondren "probably won't be able to be in any contact drills this week," said the Pillow coach. By LOUIS HILLARY PARK Sports Editor THE MUSTANGS of Pillow Academy don't have a game Friday night but they are practicing "working on fundamentals," according to PA head football coach Tony Blanton. After taking Monday off, the Mustangs went back to the game's basics. "We aren't working on our game plan for Manhattan yet," said Blanton concerning Pillow's next opponent "We're running a few of their offensive plays during scrimmages so our defense can get a look at them but we're not really into the game-plan phase yet" Blanton will use Friday's open date to scout two of Pillow's upcoming foes when he goes to Jackson to watch Manhattan and McCluer play. The Mustangs face Manhattan Sept 16 at home and McCluer Oct 2 in Jackson.
