6C NBA Thursday, October 30, 2003 Montgomery Advertiser NBA ROUNDUP James impressive in rookie debut Pacers coach beats old team -PI piJIIIWIU.IIIH A 1 kmjm 'nna By Chris Sheridan The Associated Press SACRAMENTO, Calif. LeBrilliant except for the result. LeBron James more than lived up to his hype in the first regular-season game of his NBA career, playing like no other 18-year-old ever had in his professional debut as the Cleveland Cavaliers lost 106-92 Wednesday night to the Sacramento Kings. James had 25 points, nine assists, six rebounds and four steals, mesmerizing one of the league's loudest crowds with skills no teenager had ever displayed at this level. James' point total was by far the most by any prep-to-pro rookie since Kobe Bryant made the jump in 1996, eclipsing the 10 points scored by both Jonathan Bender of Indiana in his 1999 debut and Amare Stou-demire of Phoenix last year.

In fact, James' 25 eclipsed the combined totals of Bryant (no points), Jermaine O'Neal (two), Kwame Brown (two), Eddy Curry (two), Tyson Chandler (one), Kevin Garnett (eight) and Tracy McGrady (none) in their professional debuts. James led the Cavaliers back from an early 19-point deficit, giving Cleveland its first lead by feeding J.R. Bremer for a 3-pointer that made it 85-83 with 10:05 left in the fourth. Sacramento regained control with a 6-0 run, and the Cavaliers never made a game of it down the stretch. James capped his night by shooting an air-ball from 3-point range just before the final buzzer, drawing taunts from the fans.

Peja Stojakovic led Sacramento with 22 points, Mike Bibby had 19 and Vlade Divac 18. Paul Sancya AP Rick Carlisle debut as Indiana Pacers head coach on Wednesday. Carlisle coached the Detroit Pistons last year. Hornets 88, Hawks 83 (OT) NEW ORLEANS Dar-rell Armstrong scored 18 points lifting new coach Tim Floyd and the Hornets over Atlanta. He succeeded fired coach Isiah Thomas in July. Raptors 90, Nets 87 TORONTO Vince Carter scored 25 of his 39 points in the second half as Toronto rallied past New Jersey in the season opener for both teams. Kenyon Martin had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Eastern Conference champion Nets. The Associated Press briefing Faulkner to 22-16 overall and Player of the Week honors history of the conference. midfielder Andrew McNa- outstanding performances BASEBALL Maddux files for free agency Four-time Cy Young Award winner Greg Maddux filed for free agency on Wednesday, perhaps signaling the end of his 11-year stint with the Atlanta Braves. Maddux was the third prominent member of the Braves to file for free agency, following outfielder Gary Sheffield and catcher Javy Lopez. This season, Maddux went 16-11 with a 3.96 ERA, becoming the first pitcher in baseball history to win at least 15 games in 16 consecutive seasons. He has 289 career victories, putting him in line to join the exclusive 300-win club next season.

Despite Maddux's long run in Atlanta and his chance to make more history in 2004, the Braves aren't expected to make a big pitch to keep the right-hander. First baseman Julio Franco and fifth starter Shane Reynolds also have filed for free agency. Reynolds' $3 million mutual option was turned down, meaning he'll get a $100,000 buyout from the Braves. Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kevin Millwood filed for free agency Wednesday. Millwood, 28, went 14-12 last season with a 4.01 ERA and threw his first career no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants on April 27.

The right-hander spent his first six seasons with the Atlanta Braves before he was traded to Philadelphia for minor league catcher Johnny Estrada on Dec. 20 in a cost cutting move. Millwood signed a $9.9 million, one-year contract with the Phillies. Expected to be the team's ace this season, Millwood went 7-2 in the first two months of the season. But he fell off down the stretch, going 4-6 after the All-Star break.

NFL Griese will start as Dolphins' QB Quarterback Brian Griese will start for the second consecutive week for the Miami Dolphins when they play Indianapolis on Sunday. Griese made his season debut against San Diego on Monday night, throwing for 192 yards and three touchdowns in Miami's 26-10 win. Jay Fiedler, who started Miami's first six games, was listed as questionable because he sprained his knee two weeks ago in the Dolphins' 19-13 overtime loss to New England. Fiedler was in uniform Monday night but was designated the No. 3 quarterback.

Fiedler took some snaps with the first team Wednesday, but experienced more trouble with the sprained knee ligament. Cleveland Browns running back William Green was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana possession, police said Wednesday. Green's car was stopped Monday after police received a cell phone call from a motorist reporting a possible drunken driver. According to the police report, Green was pulled over and given a field sobriety test. The officer also found a bag of marijuana weighing 3.2 grams in Green's car.

The Browns did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment Wednesday. Green, in his second NFL season, missed Cleveland's game last Sunday against the New England Patriots with a separated right shoulder. It would have been a homecoming of sorts for Green, who starred at Boston College before turning pro after his junior season.
