COLLEGE FOOTBALL 3 Friday, September 26, 2003 Montgomery Advertiser Spotlight: Cobbs leads SEC in rushing Defense: JUCO star makes easy transition j1 Ml 7 teammates, I think he has worked himself all the way back," Nutt said. "He's quick to give credit to the offensive line, knowing it takes a team effort for him to get three straight 100-yard games." Nutt has been so impressed by the senior's turnaround, he let him back on the field for one more carry against North Texas last week when he heard Cobbs needed three more yards for 100. That also gave Cobbs 20 carries in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. Before this season, Cobbs had only four 100-yard games and never in consecutive outings. Still, Cobbs has a positive attitude as he attempts to play his first full October since 1999.

"There's been many times that I just wanted to give up football or transfer because things just weren't working out," said Cobbs, who wouldn't be here this year if the separated shoulder in 2000 had happened in the fourth game he wouldn't have a fifth year of eligibility. "I stuck it out, and here I am." Nebraska's Josh Bullocks (20) returns an interception 41 yards to set up a Cornhuskers touchdown in the first quarter Thursday night. Pass-happy Huskers roll From Page 1B Frank Broyles" next-to-last season, as Arkansas tied for the Southwest Conference championship and beat Georgia in the Cotton Bowl. Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said he's glad Cobbs is back this year. "He's always been a good football player when he's been healthy," Nutt said.

"He's been healthy (this year) and he works extremely hard. He's been unselfish, working witrj the kickoff team and on the goal line he's blocking for De'Arrius Howard." Cobbs endured a lot to reach this point. After setting a freshman record with 668 yards while splitting time with Chrys Chuk-wuma, Cobbs has known nothing but injury and off-field problems. He earned a medical redshirt after separating his right shoulder in the third game of 2000, against Alabama. He missed part of 2001 with a hamstring injury and, after starting the first four games in 2002, he suffered a turf toe injury.

When he returned last year, Talley was on his way to a season, so Cobbs sat on the bench, pushed his weight over 230 pounds and had just 21 carries in the final seven games. There also was his arrest and conviction for driving under the influence of and possession of marijuana after the 2002 Cotton Bowl loss to Oklahoma. Cobbs turned 21 in on Jan. 9, 2002, while police officersearched his car. That incident and the injuries forced Cobbs to look inside for strength and he said prayer and his religious faith helped him mature.

Whatever happened, Nutt has seen a different player working hard during the summer to stay free from injury. "When I say he humbled himself, I think through his running back coach (Danny Nutt), his family, through friends and nmw Rogeho Solis AP SOUTHERN MISS 14 mentum against Southern Miss, they went to the air. Southern Miss was fooled badly on a play-action fake by Lord and let Ross Pilkington run free down the middle. Lord hit Pilkington in stride for a 44-yard score that made it 24-7 with 9:51 left in the third. After Southern Miss fumbled away a snap, Lord went deep again.

This time he hit Isaiah Fluellen right between the numbers for a 43-yard score to make it 31-7 with 7:59 to go in the third. 'SUM, TIVE SERVICE, CENTERS From Page 1B Reedley (Calif.) College. He gathered 16 Va sacks and 83 tackles last season in a respectable junior-college league, and earned some national recruiting notice. But the jump up to the Southeastern Conference is big. It often takes players a year or more to gather their bearings in top I-A conferences.

Langenfeld is shattering stereotypes. "He's everything you want," Price said. "When he first got here, his head was spinning. From his junior-college background, he's learned really quickly." That's because he has plenty of motivation. Langenfeld graduated from a South Carolina high school in 1999.

He was offered a chance to play at Clemson, but Langen-feld's grades left him far short of academic qualification. He spent the next two years floating in and out of two junior colleges and a job operating fork-lifts in Charleston, S.C. His life, he said, was a mess. "I knew I was supposed to be in college," Langenfeld said. "But at first, I wasn't ready for it.

I was the typical immature high-school senior. The whole transition of me growing up, it took a while." On a recommendation from his high school coach, Langenfeld agreed to play at a third junior-college program. Things worked out nicely for Langenfeld at Reedley, where he learned about personal responsibility and accountability. He also matured as a player. Auburn thought it got a steal when Langenfeld signed in February, and immediately placed him behind senior Reggie Tor-bor at weak-side end.

But injuries to Jay Ratliff and Bret Eddins in recent weeks left the Tigers exposed on the strong side. Coaches decided last week to move Langenfeld out from behind Torbor and into the top spot on the strong side. Coaches don't expect the transition to be difficult. Langenteld sure isn't wor ried. "I like strong-side more.

It's more physical," he said. "You don't do too much reading. You smash the tight end and just go basically from there. I like the hitting part. People think I'm crazy, but I like to get hit." Big goals: Tre Smith spent last weekend watching football on television, his team idle.

It was all fun and games until Smith watched Oklahoma's Antonio Perkins return an NCAA-record three punts for touchdowns against UCLA. Suddenly, Smith was jealous. "I want to tie or beat his record. I'm going to try," he said. "That's my goal every game." Smith had a chance for one against Vanderbilt two weeks ago.

But he was run down by a defender who had a good angle on Smith, leaving the sophomore frustrated. "I saw the end zone so bad," Smith said. "I've got to work on my breakaway speed." Strange objects: Auburn sophomore T.J. Jackson glanced at a Western Kentucky press release the other day and couldn't take his eyes away. The object of his interest? The school's unusual mascot, named "Big Red," which is a red hill with legs.

Think Grimace from McDonald's fame in all red. "What is that? Is that the Michelin Tire dude?" Jackson asked. Auburn plays the Hilltoppers Saturday at 4 p.m. MEEDSA HELPING HAND! Julian McPhillips and Kenneth Shinbaum, the Coles' attorneys, have asked that Price also remove himself from the case because his wife is a professor at the school. If Price recuses himself, the case would go to the state judicial department to be assigned to a judge from outside Montgomery County. Coe's payscale: Charlie Coe, named ASU's interim coach after Cole's suspension, is being paid $48,000 for his six-month contract. Alabama State has budgeted $32,000 for the next four months for Coe. Freddie Gallow, the school's director of fiscal affairs, said the payscale was the same as Cole's first two months.

Defensive coordinator Tony Pierce is being paid $30,000 for the six months, while tight ends coach Jack Bush will receive $27,000. Pierce and Bush came to Alabama State with Coe. Cole is making $130,000 annually. Athletic director search: Alabama State is taking applications for its vacant athletic director's position. ASU volleyball coach Sonia Price is coordinating the work of the athletic director's office on an interim basis while the school searches for a full-time replacement.

Richard Cosby, who led ASU's investigation into L.C. Cole, resigned last month.
