Phil Mickelson doesn't have to worry about Tiger Woods getting in the way at this major only David Toms, and that doesn't make it any easier. With an amazing ace to snatch the lead from Mickelson and a 35-foot birdie putt to set a major championship record, Toms brought new meaning to "Go, Tiger!" with a 5-under 65 on Saturday for a two-stroke lead in the PGA Championship. Toms made a hole-in-one with a 5-wood from 243 yards on No. 15, the ball bouncing three times before it lapped up trie base of the flag-stick and dropped. It might not have been the shot heard 'round the world, but it gave him a shot at his first major.

Toms was at 196, breaking the 54-hole scoring record for majors last set by Ernie Els (197) in the 1995 PGA Championship at Riviera. "I think I'm capable of winning," said Toms, who has never been in contention going into the last round of a major. "I showed that today, because I hung in there early when I didn't have my game, and I finished up strong." Mickelson did his part. Despite a sloppy double bogey and two mistakes on treacherous par 3s down the stretch, his eight birdies gave him his third consecutive 66 and yet another chance to win a major. It will be his seventh time going into the final round of a major within two strokes of the lead.

If the long battle to achieve recognition has taken a toll on Bacon, he isn't showing it. "I think I have a pretty good chance of starting," said Bacon, who backs up Shontua Ray at strong safety. "As long as I work hard and know what I'm supposed to do in my assignments and my reads, I believe that everything will fall into place for me." Bacon's confidence got a boost in the spring when he received the Coach Bear Bryant Best Walk-On Award, the first step toward secondary stardom for a former quarterback who wanted to play receiver in Freshman will start for Tigers By Jay G.

Tate Montgomery Advertiser AUBURN Finally, Auburn has made a decision at quarterback. And after all the hubbub, it was the most elementary of selections for Auburn's coaching staff. Quarterback Jason Campbell threw for 119 yards and a touchdown during the Tigers' winner-take-all scrimmage Saturday morning. But Auburn offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone said it was Campbell's poise and leadership skills that led coaches to promote the red-shirt freshman. "Jason, in the last three or four days, really picked up," Mazzone said.

"He's got some abilities that when things break down to be a little more explosive. As the old coach used to say, he's got an eraser on his pencil when things don't go well." Senior Daniel Cobb came out of spring drills as the team's top signal-caller, and seemed prepared to carry the title into Auburn's Sept. 1 season-opener against Ball State. But Campbell showed dramatic improvement during fall two-a-days. A confused freshman throughout the spring, Campbell seemed to grasp the passing scheme and learned how to apply his speed to game situations.

That convinced head coach Tommy Tuberville and Mazzone to stick with the 19-year-old. "I was excited when I first heard, but it wasn't a sign of relief," Campbell Call Page 4B THE CAMPBELL FILE Vitals: 6-foot-5, 213-pound redshirt freshman from Taylor-sville. Miss. High school: Parade All-America at Taylorsville High. Campbell passed for 2,884 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior.

Fall statistics: In two scrimmages during two-a-day practices, Campbell completed 10-of-15 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown. Still, some of the fans that did come out as early as 8 a.m., were not pleased that more loyal Hornet backers did not show their support. "You've got people who love football and then you have true fans. They are the ones who go the extra yard to support every football player," said Sandra Stephens, who said she has a shirt from a previous function that is filled with player autographs. "The guys who are here will be here for four or five years and I want to see them.

They need support and this is where it all gets started." There were also some parents on hand, including Nick and Sue Elmes. They drove from Mobile to support their son, incoming freshman place kicker Thomas Elmes. "I think this is great," Nick said. "It's not well attended but at least the opportunity is there." A.A. Grimes was part of the diminutive crowd at Cramton Bowl for ASU Fan Day, as players when they were not taking team pictures were available to mingle with the crowd and sign autographs.
