This was one of a variety of stories invented long ago to keep young people "moral." It doesn't happen to be true.

Dear Dr. Thosteson: My Aunt has something called shingles. She is worried because people have told her many things about shingles. Is there a cure? Does it cause other things? Someone said it would cause blindness, also mental illness, and that people never get over shingles. Please explain.

B.S.L Everything she has been told is false or at least everything that you have specified. It is very unkind to tell people such scare stories and I constantly wonder why folks do it, and whether they realize the misery they are causing. If shingles breaks out near the eyes, special care has to be taken, but that isn't where shingles usually appears. It does not cause mental illness. People do get over it, but for some it takes longer than it does others.

King University Phone 395-9000 Phone 941-9102 the fact is that you've already breathed too much. This happens to tense, nervous people who, for some reason that isn't clear, suddenly find themselves concentrating on their breathing instead of letting the breathing be automatic, as it should be. Hyperventilation is quite familiar to college health services around final exam time. The simplest remedy is to have the person start breathing into a paper bag grocery bag or whatever.

Breathe into the bag, then inhale the air from the bag. That way the amount of carbon dioxide gradually increases, and you get back into proper chemical balance. Part of the treatment also is reassuring the patient that he really is going to be all right as soon as he relaxes and lets his breathing take care of itself instead of worrying about it. Sometimes a sedative helps. Not everybody passes out from it, of course, but if you are alone and do so, I wouldn't worry about it.

Once unconscious, your natural (automatic) breathing will assert itself and that will take care of things readily. Dear Dr. Thosteson: Does regular, or should I say frequent, intercourse cause you to age faster? I was told by my mother that every intercourse would cause me to lose my strength and become ugly and age much faster. Is there any truth to this? Mrs. F.A.P.

Saturday at Pearlridge. 1 00 Polyester Dear Dr. Thosteson: I am a lady, 45, and I will gasp for breath at times (fight for air) until I pass out. It is terribly frightening. causes this, how can I prevent it, and after it happens how can I come back to consciousness if I am alone? The doctor calls it hyperventilation.

A.A Your last sentence is the clue. Hyperventilation is an odd sort of problem that is DR. GEORGE C. thosteson I grant you, very frightening for the person experiencing it. -The odd thing is that the patient invariably thinks he needs more air, when in actual fact what he needs is less.

Or to put it another way, what she) (or she needs is a little more carbon dioxide, instead. Briefly, when a person goes into an episode of hyperventilation, he knows he needs something but he doesn't know what it is. So he keeps struggling to breathe harder, which is just what he shouldn't do. That's why we call it hyperventilation breathing too much. The more you breathe, the less carbon dioxide re-mains in your system, which throws your body chemistry out of kilter for the time being.

You feel that you can't breathe, yet there's a In Hawaii, party guests, casual in muumuus or aloha shirts, prefer to sit eross-legged on the floor and do their socializing from there. But, as many know, the ol' okole built to withstand flat, hard surfaces for a long time so smart Island hostesses provide zabutons large, square cushions for their guests. THESE CUSHIONS which sell for more than $10 each at department stores can be made at home for about $6. But first, one must learn the -'secrets" involved in making zabutons in the old style. Mrs.

Shigeru Ouchi, who has had long experience in this art, will demonstrate how to make zabutons in a series of free clinics sponsored by Kuni Dry Goods. Assisted by Pauline Ku-nimune, Kuni's sewing director, Mrs. Ouchi will share her know-how in sessions at 10 a.m. today at Kuni Dry Goods at Pearl-ridge, at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Hawaii Kai store and at 10 a.m.

Saturday at the Moiliili shop. Zabuton-making has the novel appeal of a magic trick. A square piece of material is folded in half to form a rectangle, stitched on two sides then niftily opened up to make a four-sided pouch, which is, of course, the unfilled zabu-ton. 7 THEN RIGHT before your very eyes, the zabu-ton is stuffed but not the way you'd fill a pillowcase. Cotton is laid in layers on the outside of the pouch; the whole thing is rolled up into a bundle, turned inside "out and poof! you've got a zabuton.

You marvel when the secret of the corner tassles is revealed. The embroidery thread is stitched from the inside, through the cotton, and then out. And it's done so that when the cushion is turned inside out, the threads pull on the cotton and fill the corners with stuffing. Americans fill muslin bags with cotton and cover them to make But the Japanese way is just the opposite," said Mildred Shiraki, manager of the Kuni Dry Goods store in Moiliili. fSHE SAID Japanese women might us? beautiful for their cushions but cover them with muslin so the zabutons won't beer on tap? The cushions stay clean but no one sees the pretty designs. "I remember when we had parties, we'd wash and starch the muslin covers. Only you know you have something nice. I think that's so silly," said Mrs. Shiraki.

Her mother believed "that every girl should know how to sew Japanese kimonos, futons and zabutons" and Mrs. Shiraki, when 12, learned zabuton-making from her mother. "And I'm thankful she taught me." "In the olden days, every bride brought a futon plus five zabutons as part of her 0 dowry. My mother had zabutons made for to match my futon," Mrs. Shiraki said.

SHE STILL makes zabu tons insthe way her mother taught her. But soon, her cushions may have a modern touch. She has found that polyester batting feels like cotton but keeps its plumpness longer. It also costs less than cotton and can be machine washed and dried. With cotton-stuffed zabutons, she has to air them periodically and let "the sun fluff them up." When the cushions are old, Mrs.
