5 B-2 Friday, July 13, 1973 HONOLULU ADVERTISER Jewish scroll is traced to former owner, King Kalakana like Kawananakoa. In 1959, she gave it as a gift to a friend and the friend in turn gave the yad to Temple Emanu-El. FOR THE NEXT 13 years the whereabouts of the Torah were a mystery. It now appears that the Torah had been stored in Princess Abigail's home until her death, when the house was sold and her belongings distributed among friends for safekeeping. The scroll was given to Flora K.

Hayes, a former Territorial legislator and a descendant of Neighbor Island royalty. Mrs. Hayes died in 1968. She left the scroll to her son, Homer A. Hayes, chair man vof the board and executive vice president of Hayes Guard Service here.

HAYES TOLD Honolulu attorney Samuel Landau that he had "a Hebrew manuscript" and Landau, a Temple Emanu-El member, was intrigued. He got in touch with Nodel, and the Torah mystery was over. Nodel said he believes this Torah is the "the only Torah scroll in America that was once owned' by a royal household." Torahs have become rare since the Second World War, when the Nazis destroyed thousands of the Jewish documents throughout Europe. NODEL SAID Temple Emanu-El owns AFTER KALAKAUA'S death in 1891, the holy Jewish artifacts were passed down through his family first to Queen Kapio-lani; then to her nephew, Prince David Ka-wananakoa; and his widow, Princess Abigail Kawananakoa. The Toraih and yad are believed' to have (remained in the possession of Princess Abigail until her death in 1945, but there is no certain evidence that the Jewish community here used the scroll later than 1925, although it is believed that the (scroll was used through the 1930s.

The pointer came into the possession of Princess Abigail's granddaughter, Kekau- three usable Torahs, and the value of each is estimated at $1,200 to $2,000. Discovery of the Torah first came to the attention of The Advertiser in November, when Temple Emanu-El religion-school student Steven Pepper, tjhe sorio Dr. and Mrs. Leonard J. Pepper of Olino" Street, submitted a news article based oh "a short speech Nodel had given to the religion school.

Nodel, however, could not verify the story at that time, pending collection of further historical information. An article about the Torah, written by Steven Pepper, is scheduled to appear this fall in Highlights, a children's magazine. Continued from Page B-l few months teaching the king, while employed as an appraiser of customs. Rosenberg left Hawaii in June 1887, and died one month later in San Francisco. Kalakaua apparently continued his interest in Hebrew, because in December 1888, when he exhibited a number of royal curios in a large tent at a charity bazaar, the only non-Hawaiian1 items on display were the Torah and yad.

The scroll was extended and fastened around the inside top of the tent, according to an article in the Pacific Commercial Advertiser. mm 3m (1l Hh4f" 1 I fJt i 'fSOT ViTytfFj if I i Advertiser Photo by Charles Okamura r. il where there's Firemen take to the roof as a cig-', aret butt burns shingles in a minor blaze on Beretania Street yesterday.
