-1 .1 rrrt i I By LOUIS HILLARY PARK Sports Editor JACKSON The Ole Miss Rebels came here to Mississippi Memorial Stadium perhaps more outwardly confident than any Ole Miss team in half a decade. But when the shouting and the hoddy-toddies and playing of Dixie were over, the fourth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide had crushed the Rebels 42-14. It was only a three-point smaller margin than the 38-7 whipping the Tide gave the Rebs last year at Tuscaloosa. i After the game, Ole Miss head coach Steve Sloan said, "We played 100 percent better than we did last year. "Alabama is a very dominant team with very dominant players," said Sloan, a former Tide quarterback and assistant coach under the game's all-time winningest coach, Paul "Bear" Bryant.

"They are a great team and we simply haven't reached that level yet. This may be the best Alabama teaml'veeverseen." The Rebels, now 2-1, kicked off to Alabama which marched 66 yards on 11 plays for the first touchdown with 9:22 left in the opening quarter. After a 38-yard run by fullback Ricky Moore, Craig Turner leaped the line on a one-yard TD plunge. Peter Kim added the PAT and 'Bama had the lead 7-0. After an Ole Miss punt and a missed field goal try of 30 yards by Kim, the Rebels took possession at their 20-yard line.

WITH KENT AUSTIN calling the signals, the Rebels combined a good short passing game and the hard running of tailback Andre Thomas to move the ball to the Alabama eight-yard line where they had a first-and-goaL Following two unsuccessful plunges into the middle of the Alabama defense, Austin passed complete to Michael Harmon in the end zone. Todd Gatlin's kick was good and the Rebels had the game 7-7 with 24 seconds left in the first period. A fired-up Rebels' defense forced 'Bama to punt after just six plays. AP Alabama got its final points with 13:58 left in the fourth quarter when Turner scored from the one-yard line to cap a four-play, 14-yard drive. The score followed an interception at the Rebels' 18-yard line. Kim's PAT was good to set the final score.

"I'm just glad to get it over with and get out of here alive," said Bryant, who picked up his 317th career victory as the Tide upped their record to 2-0. Kelly Powell, who alternates with Austin in the Rebels' two quarterback system, was sent in to head the drive. He moved the Rebels into Alabama territory on key passes to tailback Buford McGee, including a 21-yard completion.

But at the Tide 34-yard line, Powell threw to tight end Michael Smith. The ball slipped through Smith's fingers and was intercepted by Robbie Jones in perhaps the biggest play of the game, according to Sloan. Had the Rebels scored, it would have put them ahead by at least 13-7 and given the emotional Ole Miss team a tremendous lift. Instead, the Rebels' momentum was killed. ALABAMA TOOK OVER and in 12 plays drove 74 yards.

Turner went in for the score from the one-yard line. Kim's point after touchdown put the Tide ahead 14-7 with 5:26 left in thehalf. Ole Miss took the kickoff ran three plays under Austin and had to punt. 'Bama got the ball at their own 26-yard line, then saw quarterback Walter Lewis dropped for a six-yard loss. It appeared the Rebels had the Tide trapped deep in their own territory on third-down and 16 at the Alabama 20.

But Lewis threw a deep sideline pass to split end Jesse Bendroos. A sophomore cornerback went for the interception but Bendroos caught the ball with nothing between him and the end zone. 1 The 80-yard pass play tied for third on the Alabama charts for longest pass completions. Sloan said it was the second of three "big plays" which made the major difference in the game. Alabama led 21-7 at the half On the Rebels' second play of the third quarter, Austin passed to Kinny Hooper.

The ball popped out and the Tide had Knight, and field goals of 27 and 37 yards by Dana Moore. THE TIGERS, 0-3, were down 14-0 before Thomas Ingles' 43-yard field goal in the first half.
