For the first time in over 30 "'years, the attire for umpires 3 'has undergone change. The in blue are fading. f* This season they will stand : stiffly in blue blazers, blue >. shirts (instead of the tradition{al white) and Madison Ave- •nue gray slacks. ^"Madison Avenue grayl" ex* claimed petite Betsey Johnt son, internationally known de* signer for Paraphernalia. i "Where does a businessman's j suit have a place in sport? * Why is baseball aiming for i such a dull image? I "First of all, that suit and * tie business looks terrible ev- ijlen on Madison Avenue.-Men | look their best in leisure cloth- fees, you know, in .their back"yards' and at the beach. They look their worst from 9-to-5." Miss Johnson, behind the desk in her cluttered office, shook her head. "/*na then gray! There they are swimming around in all that dirt with such a light color. It's absolutely ridiculous. "Umpires should really look great. They are the real attraction, the real personalities in the game, aren't they? They're so active and'theatri- cal, it's up to them whether the game is exciting or dull. So why should they be dressed like Harvard prep kids? They should look more like peacocks." She added that tl-.s gray blendi in with the baseball field, which is the "dullest in sports." There are no checkerboards or interesting lines or circles as on football fields or basketball courts. "It's just dirt and dull green," she said. •Miss -Johnson had several suggestions for improving the appearance of umpires. "I would make their uni- more more .functional and more colorful," she said. "They should wear, all lightweight stretch fabrics. They run around and ^ sweat just like-the ballplayers. So they should be covered completely. No Bermuda shorts'Jor short shorts. y Jerseys would' be very functional. More than 40'nations, including the Soviet Union, had threat- ened to : stay away from the Summer Olympics of South Africa were allowed to participate. The South Africans had said they would field a mixed team. Meanwhile, Jean Claude Gart- ga, secretary general of the 33- nation African Sports Council called the new IOC poll "a Victory for wisdom and good sense."'He said he was optimistic that African hations would be represented in Mexico City However, the South African member rif the IOC, Reg Honey, calld on the nine-member Executive Committee to resign. Brundage, admittedly distressed .over. the.;, controversy which brought politics onto the Olympic scene, told The Associated Press he has not made up his mind whether to accept a new term as IOC president-if such an offer is made in Mexico City. :"•••.;.•" -.--.-<:..: ,. And" various shades of each color for jersey, pants, shoes, hats. Each would 'also wear an official badge of approval on the jersey. That would make every" umpire distinctive, so' you could tell who he was from a distance." What she would really like, ,she said, Is for umpires to %ear jump suits. "That would b« the absolute ideal. Lightweight, airrconditioneji, one- piece with a- zippered front. That would .; really turn the baseball world topsy-turvy." Miss Johnson said she .understood the need for umpires to have the appearance of sophistication, stability and dignity but did not feel her innovations would detract from that image. "They're like airline stewardesses," she said. "They are supposed to instill an impression 'of respect and- confidence. They can do this wtih bright colors arid comfortable clothes, too." If they insist on black or blue, she said, then she would add a white stripe down each side of the uniform because it shows,up movements. The 25-year-old designer, whose short, dark-blond hair, "grows out of my head in a naturally curly way," was wearing a dark-blue knit sweater with red and white trim at, the sleeves ("taken from tennis"-) with a six-inch golden arrow pinned near the right shoulder and a six-foot long Paisley silk scarf ("made around 1900"): tied about her neck. An orange -suede belt held up her blue velvet pants with "big, sloppy cuffs." Her shoes were high-heeled orange loafers. "Some people consider my designs kookie," she . said.
