Big, bright and fresh.

Full of inviting displays, warm colors and comfortable chairs. And just begging to be expanded. Friends of the Library threw one fine party in honor of Eudora Welty, our hometown lady of letters, for whom the library has been named. More than 1,000 people came to toast her and share the joy of books, reading and writing. rAs I wandered around our new library the other night I was filled with pride, and nostalgia for the joy of discovery in my younger days.

Growing up in Jackson in the 50's was quite different than today. There weren't so many "private" things then. We all went to public schools. Our social activities grew out of school and church friendships. Public places like the zoo and organized programs like Brownies or Cub Scouts, filled our non-school hours.

AS DID TRIPS to the library. (I don't even remember a general bookstore in town; just the department store book sections.) My friends and I spent hours at the Livingston Park Branch. We began our library experience by attending story hours as pre-schoolers and maintained our patronage as participants in the summer reading programs. We graduated to the "dpwntown" branch when school wdrk began to include term papers requiring research and bibliographies. For a decade I also observed an annual rite of passage in the library's basement auditorium.

That was where our piano teacher mounted the yearly recital. Painful as it was, there was indeed a degree of comfort just being at the library! 1 ALSO REMEMBER the old Sears store with fondness. It was where we bought our garden tools, Brownie and Girl Scout uniforms, and years later, during the flower child 60's, blue workshirts to embroider. And it always smelled of roasting cashews and popcorn! And now all my memories come together in one magnificent place. This wonderful new library is a perfect Valentine to the City of Jackson.

The Friends of the Library and the Junior League, whose dedication helped make the Eudora Welty Library a reality, have planned a full week of exciting events at all the branches in the city.
