Miss Ninomiya's comment on running the station: "It takes time and patience." BUT PARTLY THROUGH her efforts, KIKU-TV's ratings have recently gone up, a fact Miss Ninomiya graciously attributed to "better programming from Japan" and "technical improvements which have produced a better picture." Miss Ninomiya also is keenly aware of KIKU's audience. The station's programs, 80 percent of which are from Japan, attract a middle-aged audience (those 40 years and older).

They get younger viewers from time to time. Sumo wrestling, samurai movies and Japanese home dramas which show family situations also appeal to Islanders, she said. She majored in Japanese at the University of Hawaii and studied three years at Keio University in Tokyo. "When I was in college, I really didn't know what I was going to do.

With a Japanese major, you either go into teaching or tourism," she said. "It was really by chance that, when I returned from Japan, a radio announcer left KZOO-Radio and I got her position."
