After White brought Colgate to within the Eli came back on Don Gesicki's 3-yard touchdown run at 13:49 of the second period.

Less than a minute earlier, Yale had lost a sure touchdown when fullback Rod Gordon fumbled as he entered the end zone and Colgate recovered. But Basile ody Fencik a midfield and the lanky senior carried to the Colgate 41. Fencik suffered a nose injury in the fourth quarter and was taken out of the game. The injury did not ap- pear to be serious. Two plays after the pass, Phillips escaped attackers in his own backfield and ran 43 yards to the Colgate 18.

And two plays after that, Ed Lewis scored on a four-yard run to make the score 24-7. Yale's defenders, led by linebacker Smoot, produced one interception and two fumble recoveries in the opening 30 minutes to unnerve Colgate's wishbone offense. Colgate was limited to sophomore Henry White's 10-yard second period scoring run and a 30-yard run by Jerry Andrewlavage in the fourth quarter. Conn. (AP) Quarterback Stone Phillips' passing and running, including a touchdown dash and a bomb that set up another, and linebacker John Smoot's defense carried Yale to a 24-10 college football victory over mistake-prone Colgate yesterday. The victory boosted Yale's edge in the rivalry, which began in 1909, to 20-7-3, with the Elis having won the last four games. It was the last meeting between the teams until 1979. Missourian Phillips, with little experience entering this season, completed 9 of 14 passes for 143 yards and led Yale rushers with 14 carries for 89 yards.

Yale boosted its record to 2-0, while Colgate fell to 2-1. With Yale leading 17-7, Colgate was forced to punt after its first series of the second half and Jerry Andrewlavage kicked a 37-yard beauty that went out of bounds on the Yale 2. On the Elis' third play after that, with the ball at the seven, Phillips reeled back and hurled a 50-yard pass to Gary STATISTICS Cel. 20 54-193 122 54 21-2 5-35 5-2 Vat 24 55-316 165 156 11-16-0 3-2 5-35 First downs Rushes-yards Passing yards Return yards Passes Punts Fumbles-lost Penalties-yards 3-22 INDIVIDUAL Colgate rushing: HeaJy 24-71, White 11-68, Basile 16-40, Polito3-12, Schick 1-2. (AP) -Tim LaBeau tallied the go-ahead touchdown and Cornell did all its scoring in the first half for a 21-6 victory over Bucknell yesterday. The visitors, who evened their record at 1-1 following an opening-game loss to Colgate, used interceptions of Kerry Snow passes to score one touchdown and set up another.

They stole two more passes by Snow in the closing minutes of the game. Linebacker Don Papich ran 15 yards with an interception of Snow's third pass of the game and eight plays later fullback Don Fanelli plunged over from the one for a 6-0 Cornell lead with seven min twice for 12 yards and caught an 18-yard pass from Joe Mol-lica in the drive. The final Cornell touchdown came on a 59-yard run with a pass interception by corner-back Dave Johnson. Bucknell scored the first touchdown this season on a 12-yard pass from Snow to tailback Skip Wadell in the third period. The Bisons had been blanked at Maine and cashed only a field goal in a thrashing by Rutgers.

Cornell opens its Ivy League season as host to Princeton next Saturday. Andress and split end Dick Barvinchak set up a second-period touchdown and field goal that carried lOth-ranked Penn State to a 13-3 football victory over Kentucky yesterday.

But before the Nittany Lions could post their fourth victory against one defeat, they had to stop a last-ditch Kentucky drive that carried to a first down on the Penn State 14-yard line with 2:44 remaining in the game. Kentucky picked up only four yards on three running plays before a fourth-down pass fell incomplete in the end zone. Pass completions of 15, 13 and 28 yards from Andress to Barvinchak set up a one-yard touchdown smash by fullback Larry Suhey for a 7-0 Penn State lead with 6:13 left in the second period. Barvinchak, a senior from Nimmonsburg who two years ago was Penn State's back-up quarterback, set the TD drive in motion on a first-and-15 re ception for a first down at the Nittany 30. Then on 2nd-and-2 at the State 38, he caught the 13-yarder, and converted a crucial 3rd-and-13 call from the 48 into a 28-yard gain.

He also had a 16-yard catch that carried to the Kentucky 8, deepest penetration of the drive from the Nittany 2i Bahr completed by kicking i 29-yard field-goal, Barvinchak holding. It was Bahr's ninth field goal, with the season not yet at the halfway mark. Kentucky's John Pierce booted a 36-yard field goal to cut the margin to 10-3 in the third quarter. But the Wildcats, although outgaining Penn State by a wide margin, could bend but never break the Lion defense through the final 20 minutes. Penn State could never move out of its own territory during the second half and Andress, junior from Greens-burg, had three of his passes intercepted.

But the final quarter still belonged to the Penn State defense. The first half also was a defensive battle. But the Lions made good their only two scoring opportunities while Kentucky missed two of its own. Kentucky had the edge, picking up six first down with a solid ground attack. The Wildcats missed one 44-yard field goal while Bahr attempted a record 61-yard field goal which fell short.

After the Penn State touchdown, the Kentucky counter-drive moved all the way to the Penn State 8. But Tom Odell intercepted Derrick Ramsey's pass on the Lion 2 to end that threat. Sonny Collins, Kentucky tailback who already is the all-time recordholder for career rushing yardage by a Southeastern Conference player, gained 142 yards in 32 carries. That was a virtual standoff against the entire Nittany running attack, which except for Duane Taylor's 16-for-69 and Woody Petchel's 6-for-31, didn't have a man above 15. Penn State is 4-1, host Saturday to current Lambert Trophy leader West Virginia, 4-0 after its 28-22 win at Scran-ton Methodist yesterday.

The SUNY Athletic Conference win was the fifth in six games for the fourth-in-the-state and 20th-ranked nationally SUNY booters, who got goals from freshman Jim Ber-ardicurti and senior Steve Springer. The duo share the team scoring lead with four each. New Paltz, now 3-2, got its goal with five minutes left in the game, thanks to a communication problem in the Colonials defense.

SUNY's next opponent is unbeaten Oneonta State, in a game Saturday at Oneonta. The Colonials' cross-country team finished fifth among 16 schools in the LeMoyne Invitational run yesterday, its best finish ever, despite the absence of No. 1 runner Bob Daniels.
