18, was the main item of business taken up Tuesday night by the Wood River Women's Democratic Club at a meeting in East Alton at City Hall. The round up which is strictly for women, will be the last get-together before election day, and both state and national ers of the party will be on the program. Plans are being made to charter a bus in which to make the trip to the armory in Springfield where the meeting will be held. A card party to be given sometime this month was also planned and two new members, Mrs. Oliver Vernor and Mrs.

G. L. Chamness, were received into the membership at this week's meeting. Because of the, long business meeting, entertainnierit was dispensed with, and refreshments were served by the hostesses, Mrs. Rose din, Mrs.

Frankie 'Jones and Mrs. Edith DeLong. Announcement has, been made by officers that women outside the organization may make arrangements to attend the Springfield meeting by jetting in touch with a member of the club. Announce Marriage WOOD RIVER. James Buckner, son of Mrs.

R. Buckner of East Alton, and Miss Dorothy Carf roll, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Carroll of Ferguson avenue, are announcing their marriage whicii occurred last Saturday night at St. Charles, Mo.

The couple are residing in East Alton and he is employed at Kienstra Brothers Coal and Ice Co. here. Mrs. Locke In Hospital WOOD RIVER Mrs. Charles Locke of Rosewood Heights is a patient at Alton Memorial Hospi tal following surgical treatment which she underwent Monday. She was reported doing well today.

E. 8. Card Party WOOD River Or- of Eastern Star will sponsor a public card party at Odd Fellow's Hall Thursday night, Oct. 10. Pinochle, bridge and bunco will be played.

Morgan Hostess WOOD RIVER Mrs. Herbert Morgan entertained at a luncheon jarty yesterday at the Postlewaite Hostess House when she had as her guests members of a club. The uncheon table was centered with a 'loral piece of orchid asters and following luncheon which was served at 1:30 o'clock, two tables of cards were in play. Prizes were awarded Mrs. Clarence Hardesty, Mrs.

Morgan, Mrs. Virgil Brave and Mrs. Wilson DeLong. Mrs. Roy Rees of Prospect street invited the club members to be her guests in two weeks.

Returned From Greenfield WOOD Mrs. Joseph Saxton returned to her home on Penning avenue the first of the week after a two week visit in Greenfield at the home of her mother and father. Mrs. Saxton's mother, who has been ill for some- Report Accidents At Wood River WOOD RIVER, Oct. automobile accidents, one In which a passenger Incurred Injury, was reported to police within a period of less than 24 hours Tuesday.

The first mishap occurred outside the city limits, on Roxana-Edwardsville road, near the Illinois Pipe Line Pumping station, when automobiles of William Bond of East Alton and Denny Murphy of Ceseyvllle, collided head-on, according to a report made to police. Bond called at the police station here following the accident. He said the mishap occurred on a curve when the car driven by Murphy struck the Bond car head- on. Both cars were damaged to the extent they could not be moved under their own power and were towed to a garage here, the report shows. Murphy, it was said, suffered a laceration of the head for which he received treatment at the office of a physician here.

At about 5:15 p. Tuesday report was made of an accident on Route 67, near intersection of Wood River avenue, in which a motorcycle of George Bockholt and an automobile were involved. The police report shows Bockholt was starting to pass the car, when the collision occurred. shown no Improvement, she said, and she expects to return to Greenfield soon. Tretter Home WOOD T. E. Tretter of Woodland avenue, Lincoln Place, and her son, Paul, have returned home after visiting. ter at Hines Hospital near Chicago. Tretter has been a patient at Hines for about a month and underwent a major operation Sept.

Owens to Entertain WOOD F. D. Owens will entertain members of the St. Gabriel's Ladies Guild of North Alton News Large Crowd at Farewell The esteem in which the Rev. John Morrison, pastor of Elm Street Presbyterian Church, is held by the congregation, was, attested Tuesday evening at a farewell gathering at the church.

The Rev. Mr. Morrison has accepted the pastorate of a church in Fort Wnyne, and will leave about the middle of the month for his new charge. Charles Landlss had charge of the program. Officers of the various departments of the church spoke.

Humpy, the magician, entertained gathering with some clever tricks. Tho Rev. Mr. Morrison made a short talk, in which he thanked all for their loyalty and cooperation during his pastorate at the Elm street church. A large number of gifts were presented Rev.

Morrison. At the close of the program, refreshments were served, and most of the crowd lingered around awhile. It was plainly evident that the people felt that the Elm street church was losing a true and devoted leader. Card Party Friday Night Parent-Teacher Association of Clifton Hill School is sponsoring a pinochle and bunco party, Friday night, at the school on Alton-Jer- seyvllle road. Games will get under way at 8 o'clock.

Since the opening of school there has been Increased interest among the patrons of the association, and a large attendance is expected at the party of the season. Following the games and the awarding of favors, there will be" refreshments. Lead Removed From Eyes Jiles Reeder of 1817 Ervay avenue, an automobile mechanic, employed at the Stanka Garage, West Delmar avenue, is recovering from a severe infection of both eyes. While at work last week Reeder was using a sanding machine, when suddenly some small particles of lead from the sander filled both eyes. Surgical attention was neces sary in removing the lead, a pain ful operation, and during lost weekend the inflammation had developed to an alarming degree.

However, the infection hem responded to treatment, with no serious after effects. Already a Busy Highway While there are shoulders to be built rails placed along the new Delhi-Jerseyville concrete road, the highway is a short route from, the Jersey county seat to Alton, of which truck drivers especially are taking advantage. Over the new route the time from Alton to Jerseyville is cut about one-half, as compared- with. Route 67. All traffic north of Jerseyville, coming south, is Using the new road, with less curves and fewer bumps.

Many lives have been lost, numbers of persons injured and machines wrecked between the North Side and Jerseyville, on Route 67, and It is thought the new road through Delhi will'be the means of preventing accidents, for which Highway 67 was known far and wide.

But one thing is certain: the nfiwly-bulll highway will be a speedway for some fast drivers, and no telling what might happen. Ocot. the supervision of Fire Chief William Mitchell of Roxana the Fire department is observing fire prevention week. Tuesday afternoon the drivers and volunteers went to Brushy Grove School and gave a safety talk and demonstration of fire equipment and safety devices and today they had fire drill and demonstrations at the But bank school.

Each Fire plug is placarded with a safety slogan and members of the department are giving fire prevention talks at various places. To end the week's activities the Madison County Fireman's Association will hold its annual regional Fire school at Roxana. The Fire School program will consist of moving pictures at the new Roxana theater in, the morning and pictures and speakers at the Roxana Community Building in the afternoon. The Mothers Club of 'Roxana wil serve din- child, Marian Elizabeth, while here. Mr.

Baker and Mrs. Fred Berry, Gilbert Van Camp and Don Gardner. Birthday Party J. W. Meyers of East Fourth street entertained a group of children last Saturday afternoon at a birthday party in honor of her son, Eddie.
