PAGE TWELVB ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH MONDAY, MARCH 25,1 946 Farm Taxpayers To Meet Tuesday To Give Information to Use at Town Meetings EDWARDSVILLE, March 25, Delegations of farmer taxpayers from all townships of the county will attend a meeting at the courthouse Tuesday evening to discuss township and county tax problems. The meeting has been arranged by I ho legislative committee of the Madison County Farm Bureau for taxpayers to obtain Information to use a't annual town meetings on April 'i. Members the committee are W. F. Bardelmeier, Edwardsville; Wm.

D. Dorsey; Tony J. Drcxellus, Bethalto, and G. G. Pape, Edwardsvllle.

One of the speakers Tuesday evening will be Burl Vandcrvliet, executive secretary of the Madl- son-St. Clair Civic Federation, who will present data on the tax situation in each township. Property tax bills are likely to be substantially larger in 1046 and the years immediately following, staler! the committee, but some of this increase may be offset by greater efficiency In operation of public services and facilities and by eliminating all unnecessary expenditures. From 75 to 90 percent of all farm property taxes nre levied by the townships and school districts in which the property Is located, so the local taxpayers can control the greatest part of their total property tax bills. Most of the remainder is controlled by the county board of supervisors.

All tax levies for relief, the payment of salaries and expenses of township officers and all other township purposes (except roads and bridges) are made by the voters present at the annual town meeting. This meeting is held at 2 o'clock of the day of the township election which this year is Tuesday, April 2. According to present law, townships are responsible for poor relief. Under legislation enacted in 1945 townships may levy as much as 15 cents on each $100 worth of property (actual value) in the township. Many townships will not need such a large amount of relief and will not need to make so large a levy.

On the other hand, the township Is required to levy an amount equal to 15 cents on each $100 worth of property 1 (actual value) In order to obtain additional relief funds from the state if they are needed. With the exception of the levy for relief purposes there are no legal limits upon the tax levies which may be made in the town meeting. Resident taxpayers must be present if they wish to exercise proper control over the township tax levies. The Farm Bureau is urging all farmers and landowners to attend their annual town meetings.
