4sic wn Miracle workers of funk What are your current favourite records? DJ Shadow: What Does Your Soul Look Like Now, Metal-heads: Inner City Life mixes), Unkle: Time Has Come, Money Mark: Various, Massive Attack: Karma Coma (Unkle Mixes). What record would you most like to Date and place of birth 22.2.74. Oxford. How did yon-get into DJ-ing? Underground Movement parties at various places around Oxford between 1989-91. Mo Wax Please at The-Venue, Oxford, in 1991.

Whowhat was LIVING up to its reputation as one of the best live jazzfunk bands on the circuit, Jamiroquai made its singular presence felt with the first of two nights at London's Forum. It was a tight, well-integrated, but energetic and charismatic performance, featuring songs from the band's debut and its recent follow-up The Return Of The Space Cowboy (Sony), plus a handful of covers. Jamiroquai's tendency towards musical retrospection has been a critical Achilles' heel ever since the group burst onto the scene last year, but it seemed an insignificant issue once the band found its groove. Certainly, the shadows of Stevie Wonder, psychedelic-era Temptations, Roy Ayers and Jimi Hen-drix could all be glimpsed at various times in the riffs, mellow electric piano harmonies and funky wah-wah guitar; but the band was soaked in that trendy, '90s neo-beat aesthetic that has accorded it not only its cool, but also its earth-loving, young but passive, widespread appeal. Vocalist and outspoken bandleader Jason Kay is an extraordinary figure to watch.

Seemingly hyperactive, he does not so much dance as dart fast and ferret-like in his trademark teacosy hat (yes, he's still wearing it despite posing hatless for the Face recently). His thin but musical voice and superb timing were the source of the best music, despite a virtuoso Spinal Tap: Stone1 Henge. What is the most embarrassing thing to happen to you while DJ-ing? Most of my DJ-ing is semi-embarrassing! What is the strangest place you've played In? Abus shelter in Berlin, the Clock Room in the Astoria at the Beastie Boys jam, and most clubs in Japan (they're all strange). How do you relax? A bag of weed or eating in restaurants. Where do you buy your records? Fat Cat, Honest Jon's, Sound Source, Mr Bongo and my special selection of private dealers.

Where do you see yourself going musically? Across the board. With my Mo Wax label, I would love to have one or two acts spanning all the music that I like (techno, jazz, abstract hiphop, avant garde jungle, retro and sophisticated lyrical hip hop). the inspiration? Hip hop, electro, jazz, early techno from labels like Warp and places like Detroit (ie Rhythm Is Rhythm), hearing Giles Peterson, Spraycan and Subway Art books, Bristol (Massive Attack, 3 Stripe, Smith And Mighty). The idea of Head Music came from hearing Shadow, Nightmares On Wax, Major Force Records and abstract jazz such as Sun Ra. What other Jobs have you done? Editor of Straight No Chaser magazine and worked in Bluebird Records.

How much money do you command for a two-hour set in the UK? A bag of weed and a strongpina colada! Which are your favourite clubs? That's How It Is, Oldskool Fridge Sessions (London), Sound Factory (New York), Thekla and Blue Mountain (Bristol), Sub Club (Glasgow). Who are your favourite DJs? These are more events where a has blown me away: Giles Peterson (a general influence), Justin Winks (Underground Movement), Will Bankhead, Massive Attack (one of the best nights out), Kudo (but he's married Fast and ferret like Jason Kay is always extraordinary to watch umental applause. If he had passed it around the 2000-strong audience, that would have been something to really applaud a biblical Jason Kay performing miracles without fish or loaves but with an eight-album deal, there is plenty of time for that yet For now, two hours of non-stop dance music without a single tedious moment is truly impressive enough. Linton Chiswick rhythm section that included percussion, a DJ and two inspired, mesmeric appearances by Wallace Buchanan London's funkiest exponent of the didgeridoo. Just in case there was any uncertainty about the theme of his latest album's title track, he ostentatiously flourished something as similar to a joint as Sony, no doubt would have allowed, and (after a member of the audience threw a lighter on stage) lit it and passed it around the band to mon Headz: A Soundtrack Of Experimental Beathead Jams, a collection of James Lavelle's favourite abstract moments in music is out next, week on Mo Wax.

working-class audience of terrace boys, skinheads and shopgirls based in Rotterdam, Frankfurt and more recently, Brooklyn, Gabber is a Euro-noise phenomenon that remains deeply underground in the UK. Accusations of anti-semitism and sexism have bounced off the music's industrial-strength, aggression. Check out Euromasters Alles Naar de Klote, Klof Zaaken's Do-minee Dimitri and Rotterdam Termination Source's Poing. Kodwo Esfiun young Liam's relationship with his singer brother Noel is famously bad and frequently ends in fisticuffs, on stage Phew, Rock'n'Roll that's what we like. But hey, that's not all.

Liam went on to say that, "I fuckin' hate it. That's not going on no fuckin' record of ours!" Hmmm could it have anything to do with his brother singing in a silly, nay cod, American accent? Stone Roses are another gossip's dream. Taking four years to get their second album together and delaying its arrival several times means they give good copy. Anyhow, it's now imminent, so much so that they previewed a single on Radio 1 on Monday and had it delivered by a security firm, played, and whisked back out of Broadcasting House. Now Group 4 has lost it (only Ok, Ok, Ok I know we've been here before but, well, blame it on Oasis, they keep producing the goods.

No sooner had they laid down two tracks for the B-side of their Christmas single (entitled Whatever) than up pops guitarist Liam Gallagher and claims that one of these is Hangon, that'sabit much, your brother wrote thefltppin thing didn 't he! Yes, indeed he did, but IS FOR CABBERHOUSE SO HARD it makes Napalm Death sound like The Carpenters, Gabber-house is the reviled bastard child of the Digital Era. Invented in Rotterdam two years ago, when the Dutch house scene split along class lines, the Gabber sound (meaning "lad" in Dutch) is a fiercely apocalyptic combination of jackhammer-kickdrums and distorted bass.
