Whenever I see a picture or a film, some small detail may set off a train of thought. It's self-inflicted torture. My work involves looking at pictures but reading is perfect for giving me ideas with details and a greater historical sense.

Reading can block work out too. It's compulsive. I can't stop because it's completely satisfying. I've recently read Bleak House, because I haven't read much Dickens. I've always got a book to hand when I'm travelling.

I particularly love 19th century French novels. I dip into Colette from time to time. They were such a great inspiration, her descriptions are so sensual, very good for translating into something tangible. Reading has a good effect on my morale if I'm restless or depressed. My memory is really bad, but I like the idea of learning.

All my history I've gleaned from novels. Everything I know about Napoleon came from War And Peace. If it's set in a novel with romance I can take it in. As I get older, I listen to less and less'music but it's useful to elevate my mood. When I find it hard to concentrate, I put some music on and dance a little by myself.

More likely I would read something. I see a few films but when I go to the cinema or get a video, I worry too much when I'm choosing, and then I feel down because I can't decide. I don't normally see blockbusters but I was impressed with the confidence of the presi- dent in Independence Day Bella Freud's show. The Best Dressed Chicken InTown, opens on September 29 at The Fridge, Brixton. Interview by Caroline Egan.
