Mallory requested that Manning give his advice as to whether the council should contact a higher official of the company in regard to the situation.

A. group of Sixth street residents appeared before the council at Its last July meeting and protested that the power lines were unsafe for the residential district. The letter, written by J. L. Cross, Wood River manager for the power company, to the mayor and city council, said: "We have your letter of July 28, 1948, advising that residents on Sixth street have notified-you of the hazard involved in the high voltage line at that location.

"We have Inspected this line and find no greater hazard now than existed for previous years The circuits on North and South Sixth streets represent major feed' er circuits which suppply powei to Wood River, and their ellnv ination would result In no power for this area. "The re-routing of the line a this time is not practical as 1 would involve building lines 01 private property which we feel certain would meet with disap proval by dther residents, "We will keep this r'equest in mind and if any changes arise in which these lines can be re-rout ed, we will gladly advise you." A detailed Inspection of the parking ot and truck depot of the Major Transport at the corner of First artd Madison, will be made by the city fire department and a group of fire Inspectors who will visit the city In September, as the result of City Council discussion at Us meeting, Monday night. Various opinions were given on Hie lot and depot after Alderman Kasten read a letter from a resident of that vicinity asking city action to' prevent parking of the trucks in the street, and to prevent the trucks from putting streets and alleys In disrepair. Mayor Humphrey expressed the opinion that the lot Is within the fire zone and Is a fire hazard. City Attorney Manning said the council can declare the lot a nuisance and take action but first the city must have evidence to support Its claims. The council will await the arrival of 74 fire Inspectors In the city In September, before taking ajiy action.

Alderman Mallory asked to what extent contractors are liable to damage to streets trucks used in hauling material to building sites, and was Informed that the city can place load limit signs on the streets. A recent accident at the corner of Wood River avenue and Edwardsvllle road drew a discussion of inadequate street and slop markings. The aldermen were perturbed by the fact that Trl- City Grocery''Co. has failed to maintain an "In Only" sign on the Ferguson avenue side of its new store parking lot. Chief of Police Starkey was Instructed to inform the Slocker heating and plumbing firm to discontinue -park- Ing so as to block an alley running from Lorenn, south to the alley between First and Whltelaw.

Alderman DeWltt informed the council that large "25. MPH" signs are being painted on Sixth street, and will be placed on other streets In town. In regard to the Sixth 'street problem, Mayor Humphrey said all that remains now Is to designate which side of the street will be closed to parking. The mayor said he thought it still was 'the duty of the residents to name which side should be closed, and pointed out that though residents have said it would be of no consequence to them which side Is named, there still was some dissenting comment when the mayor arbitrarily said the east side would be closed. It was reported that residents of Acton avenue beyond- Ninth had turned out In force and In one day's time had laid 300 feel of put In two catchbasins to carry off standing water.

Alderman Kasten gave the opinion that a bid of $138 for cutting a door in the north side of the City Hall was too high, and council members then expressed tho opinion that the door was unnecessary anyway. An ordinance Was read transferring $15,000 from the cash working.fund to the general fund. The finance and police reports were read. Mrs. Fred Isamingcr jr.

resigned from the library board, and Mrs. L. Kimmel was named' to succeed The city received its annual audit preports from the 3. Schlosser firm, but the mayor stated he. would call a meeting soon with Schlosser, since the audit showed cash receipts for the year of $57,108.96, and cash 1 disbursements of $56,477.77, for a balance of $631.19 as of last April 30.
