Chapman, transport pilot of C-47 was a member of the 70th troop carrier squadron, 433rd group In part ot the Fifth All- Force Troop Carrier command. He lost his life March 10, 104R when his plane crashed on the northwest slope ot Mt. Cabnngnngan, Leyte in the He had participated in his unit's first mission into Luzon airdromes nnd was on his return to the base when the plane crashed. Born Dec. 18, 1020 al Cuba, he moved to Alton with his family as a small child and attended Milton school, the family moved back to Cuba and there he graduated from the Cuba High school.

His family moved back to Alton eight years ago. He was employed In the En- fineerlng department of the Cur- Uss-Wrlght of St. Louis before entering service in January, 1943. He received Ills commission Feb. 1044 nt Fredericks Field, Frederick, Okln.

Gerald, 8, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Cooper, 328 George, was Injured when struck by a car In the 300 block on Main street Tuesday at 4:20 p. m. Gerald was struck by a car driven by Vlctrfr L.

Cum- mlngs of Route 1, East Alton. Cummlngs told Chief of Police Homer Jenkins that Gerald ran across the street, cutting between two cars directly In the path of his car. Cummings said he did not see the boy until too late to avoid hitting him. Chief Jenkins called Streeper's ambulance which took the boy to St. Joseph's Hospital, where" he Is still a patient.

Blaine also visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Fosha of Wood River, and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Blaine visited her sister, Mrs.

Tony Mormino in Alton. Sharon remained here for a week's visit. Her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Blaine, plan to go to Rolla for the weekend and take her home.

Birthday Observed EAST and Mrs. H. O. Clausen ot North Pence avenue, entertained Sunday In observance of Clausen's 73rd birthday. The dinner was arranged as a surprise for Clausen.

Guests, all of were relatives, included his three children, George Clausen of East St. Louis, William Clausen and Mrs. Floyd Blaine of East Alton. Five of his six grandchildren and his only great-grandchild were also guests. Clausen, who is assistant to the Janitors ot both Lincoln nnd Washington schools, is caretaker and janitor for the Lincoln school gymnasium.

In addition to his work, he is active in the First Baptist, church, where he served several years as teacher of the Men's Bible class. Guests at the celebration were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stewart, Mr. and Mrs.

Harley Stubblefield, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Johnson, Mrs, Connie Martin, and Mr. and Mrs. Orvllle Clausen of Decatur; Mr.

and Mrs. J. E. Blaine and daughter, Sharon and Mr. and Mrs.

Gentry's brother. 6 Los Angeles Policemen Injured Halting Riot LOS ANGELES. Feb. Six police officers received minor injuries and two youths were arrested yesterday after GO policemen were called to halt rioting among more than 1000 young men in Lincoln Park. Police said the riot wns touched off by I he arrest of a Negro youth who they said was throwing rocks at boats in the park lake.

The officers said they were then immediately surrounded by a mob of other Negro youths. Albert Mtirpjiy Dies In Los Angeles Albert. Murphy, a former resident of Alton, died Monday in tos Angeles, Calif. He was born in Alton and lived here the early part of his life. For a long time he wast employed on the old Bluff Line Railroad out of Allon. He left here to live In Los Angeles and prospered there, handling real estate.

Frequently he would make visits, back in Allon, looking up old, friends. His last visit here was last. summer. He leaves a son and daughter in Los AngeleS, three sisters and one brother In California: a sister in Hannibal, and sister in East St. Louis.
