1934. WOOD RIVER, Nov, four letter men-back to bolster its hopes, until January, at least, East Alton-Wood River Community High'' School's basketball squad will open its playing season Wednesday night here against Bethalto. The Bethalto game will be one of three pre-conference season contests which will bring here two St. Louis teams Beaumont and Roosevelt. Closlnglts football season a week ago last Saturday, the Oiler squad has had somewhat of an advantage over a few other schools hi the Madison-St.

oiair Conference who hao to keep their double-duty boys on the gridiron until last Saturday or Thanksgiving. In addition, the Oilers, because separate coaches have charge of football and basketball, have been able to develop a pre-season basketball squad this year to train candidates who were not on the football team. How much this will have helped remains to be seen. However, two of last season's basketball regulars who do not play the grid game were able to get in a few advance licks on the Court. The cage lettermen back this year are Wildt and Counsil, regular starting forwards from last year's squad; Counsil, center and guard; and Christeson, also a combination center and guard, who has been playing at forward with "the preseason squad.

Last year's regular forwards, Ufert and Wildt. will be lost at mid- Counsil and Christeson will remain year because of graduation, but for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, Vuclch, Hudson, Pim- Jott, and Harmer all remain from last year's reserve squad, while Clark and Davis, who have come up from East Alton's grade schools, are looked to by Coach-Summers to give these men warm competition for regular berths. Vucich saw frequent duty with the regulars, but did not win a letter. Eller and Hobbs, both guards last year, are the only 1933-34 regulars who did not return.

Since the conference does not officially award a title, gold probably are in order in both schools. Augustana finished its campaign with a 41 to 7 victory over Carthage, Saturday, to attain a record of six straight triumphs. Millikin bowled over Bradley, 26 to 0, for its fifth victory, Millikin, however, was held to a scoreless tie by Wesleyan, the only spot on its record. Southern Teachers College was bounced out of a shore of the mythical title by Wesleyan, Saturday. The Teachers led until the final quarter, through a safety taken by Wesleyan, but the Titans connected for a touchdown to win, 8 to 2.

Southern landed in a third place tie with Illinois College at five victories arm one defeat. Illinois College defeated McKendree. 33 to 0, and by beating Carthage Thanksgiving Day, can take undisputed possession of the place in the standing. In the other games, Northern Teachers outpointed Eastern, 18 to 12, in a great battle, and St. Viator defeated St.

Mary of Winona, 7 to 0. The latter contest was played Saturday night in the 124th Field Artillery Armory at Chicago, The season's business will wind up Thanksgiving Day with the struggle for the bronze turkey, between Knox and Monmouth on the letter's field, as the high spot. By losing, Knox would "equal Hobart College's intercollegiate record of 27 straight defeats. Bradley meets Cornell of Iowa, at Peoria, and Millikin plays Rose Poly of Indiana, at Decatur. Wesleyan meets Hanover, College at Hanover.

The standing: LT Augustana 0 0 Millikln 5 1 Southern 510 0 2 2 0 0 0 Owens Illinois Kickers Lose Soccer Match The Owens-Illinois soccer team lost to the Wahoo Indians of Louis Sunday at Cherry stwet, 3 to 0. The Indlr will come to Alton in two wee for a return engagement. Johnson scored the first goal for the Indians, and the other two points were taken by Keating and Hough. This evening the glee will meet, and two departments, Corrugated and Mold Repair, will hold regular meetings.
