Miller, with 11 points, was the only other Utes player besides Van Horn to score in double figures.

Duncan fouled out with 36 seconds left, his first disqualification in 46 games and Wake Forest's first this season, but by that time it was merely a matter of margin. Twenty-two seconds earlier, his two free throws gave Wake Forest a 65-55 lead. "Tim always makes the right plays," Deacons coach Dave Odom said. "We can always count on him." At first, the much-heralded matchup of Duncan and Van Horn lived up to the pre-game hype. Van Horn had 15 points at half-time.

Duncan had 14, including eight of Wake Forest's last 11 points before Van Horn had 24 points but hit only 10 of 25 shots to Duncan's 9-of-ll, and had just four rebounds to go with one blocked shot. Utah's 6-foot-lO senior forward had no assists. Duncan credited the Deacons' 3-point shooting (43.8 percent, 7-of-16) and defense. "Those 3s were huge shots and really got us going," he said. "Defense also was a key to our game, and we stepped it up when it mattered the most." Wake held the Utes (8-2) to just 32.8 percent shooting, continuing the Deacons' season-long trend of holding opposing shooters under 35 percent.

Meanwhile, Wake Forest hit 53.1 percent from the floor, while enjoying a 43-30 rebounding edge. Win or lose, the key for the Utes as al ways was Van Horn. He scored Utah's first nine points, but visibly tired as the game wore on. But Van Horn, who missed Saturday's game at Irvine due to the flu, refused to make excuses. "It seemed everything Duncan shot went in," he said.

"(But) I missed a lot of shots that I would normally make. "If you don't shoot well against a team as good as they are, you just aren't going to win." Jerry Braswell and Tony Rutland added 12 points each for Wake Forest, which beat Utah 60-56 last season at Winston-Salem, N.C. Utah led 30-27 at the half, but Braswell's 3-pointer to open the second half tied it. Duncan's move inside gave Wake Forest a 38-36 lead with 13:08 to play. Steve Goolsby's 3-pointer pushed Wake Forest's advantage to 45-40.

Then, as the Utes sagged inside to cover the 6-10 Duncan and Rick Peral, the Deacons found the range outside. Rutland dropped in a 17-footer and Bras-well a 3-pointer to stretch the Deacons' margin to 50-41 with 6:16 remaining. Bras-well and Rutland each hit 3-pointers that helped to keep cold-shooting Utah at bay down the stretch. After Majerus called a timeout with two minutes left to put his Utes into a fullcourt press. Wake Forest finished the job at the foul line.

"Wake, Kansas and Kentucky are three teams that have a chance to win the national championship," Majerus predicted. Utah got no closer than seven the rest of the way, that at 62-55 when Andre Miller THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SALT LAKE CITY Wake Forest's Tim Duncan, outshining fellow All-America Keith Van Horn, might have decided more than the outcome of his second-ranked Demon Deacons' showdown with No. 7 Utah. The senior center's performance in a TOSS New Year's Eve victory over the Utes likely made him the early favorite to be the first to go in next summer's NBA draft. "Duncan is obviously the No.

1 draft pick this year," Utah coach Rick Majerus admitted. "He's just a great player." Duncan had 23 points and 16 rebounds, his I8th-straight double-double. He also had eight assists and three blocked shots for Wake Forest (9-0)..
