Island TV Owner By BERT DARK Oahu's former KTRG-TV (Channel 13) which officially goes on the air today as KIKU-TV. is owned now by a former newspaperman with a wealth of experience in business enterprise as well as broadcasting. East coast financier and philanthropist Richard Eaton, who filed with the FCC a year and a half ago to purchase KTRG-TV acquired the property from Hono ---'V lulu's David Watumull for more than $600,000. Eaton's own career smacks of a few chapters gleaned from a well written adventure story. He overcame an attack of infantile paralysis at college in the 1920s with courage enough to build a chain of French newspapers only to lose them to Hitler's invading armies 20 years later.

He returned to the U.S. in time to join the Mutual Broadcasting System, where a year lat Watumull er he ad-libbed on the network for about an hour following announcement of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941. Today as president of the Friendly Broadcasting Corp. and owner of stations in New Hampshire, Washington, D.C.

and Baltimore and seven Mainland radio stations, Eaton plans to devote half of KTRG-TV's programming to Japanese shows, serving the Island market with a foreign language outlet. Chicago-born, Eaton left the U.S. as a youth when his dad, a doctor, was assigned to a Parisian hospital. At college age, he returned to the U.S. to attend Harvard.

An attack of polio interrupted his education but he managed to graduate on crutches with the class of 1920. Back. in Europe, he became foreign correspondent for a Paris newspaper and worked also for foreign language magazines in Paris, Brussels and London. As his interest in foreign journalism ton eventually became publisher of 2G French newspapers. In 1940, as Hitler's military menace grew, Eaton abandoned his properties and fled for his life to Spain, then Portugal.

Eventually, he returned to the U.S. with his mother, wife and son, Pierre. Even today, though, he retains his concern for Europeans. A few years ago he and his wife adopted five European refugees. His newest venture in Honolulu's KTRG-TV is 1 a continuation of interest in foreign enterprise.

This i time his interest points to the Orient. rt TRAVEL TOPICS by Micky Waterman Doc Severinsen one of the nation's top trumpeters and conductors, takes the podium for NBC's Johnny Carson next week.
